fiction, the truth being that
a Soviet emigre was clean-
ing floors because the school
was able to find something
for her to do. The fiction be-
ing that it was forcing her to
do this.
I wrote a letter to the
rabbi. I told him that all of
us do things in our jobs that
aren't always correct. I also
told him that when I make a
mistake in a story I'm doing,
be it spelling someone's
name wrong or any other in-
accuracy, I've got thousands
of readers processing my
mistake. In the case of the
Soviet emigre and the
school, when it came down to
the bottom line, I was more
at a loss for my mistake than
anyone who read it. Don't
ever let a journalist tell you
he or she can always
separate the professional
from the personal. I don't
want to know a journalist
who doesn't take his profes-
sional responsibility per-
sonally.
Why am I writing about all
of this?
Two weeks ago, I wrote an
editorial about the Jewish
Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit. The
editorial came on the heels
of the organization's annual
meeting. It came on the
heels of a successful year for
the Council and as outgoing
president Paul D. Borman
ended three years of vol-
unteer service at the helm.
My intention in writing
the editorial was to urge the
Council to seek even better
ways of improving commu-
nal relations between blacks
and Jews and Arabs and
Jews. Black and Jewish re-
lations, in particular, is a
nerve ending for me. In some

ways, I see it as an issue that
sometimes requires more at-
tention than missions to
Israel. I have a bias here,
and I admit it.
However, the editorial
came out strongly hitting
what Paul D. Borman had
spent years of volunteer
effort on, putting in more
time in three years than
most of us will volunteer in a
lifetime.
In Baltimore, I wanted to
see more for the Soviet
emigre than washing floors.
Here in Detroit, I want to see
the Council succeed and
break new ground, crossing
bridges it has never crossed
before.
But the school and rabbi in
Baltimore weren't being bad
guys. They were giving
everything they could at
that time to the Soviet
woman who, by the way, is
now back working in her
field of computers. And
neither was Paul D. Borman
being a bad guy. He, too, was
giving everything he could
during a time that was rife
with the highs of Soviet and
Ethiopian evacuations to the
lows of Scud missiles hitting
Tel Aviv.
The day the story of the
Soviet woman appeared in
the Baltimore Jewish Times,
my rabbi friend was called
and criticized. Two years
later, it was Mr. Borman
getting those calls, though
not for criticism.
Mr. Borman, I drew you
too close to the point I was
making. While I stick to my
guns on many of the issues
regarding the Council, the
editorial should have clearly
distinguished your three-
years' service with dignity,
honor and achievement. ❑

below the $25 million stated
in the article.
The second correction is in
terms of the alleged "hiring"
of KKE, the architectural
firm, by the home last
November. KKE was selected
this past fall, but the actual
decision to hire and conclude
a contract with the firm has
only recently been establish-
ed as per a joint decision bet-
ween the Home and the
Jewish Welfare Federation.
The article also states that
Comprehensive Aging Ser-
vices, Inc., (CAS) "has not
generated revenue in four
years," which happens to be
totally untrue. My statement
to Ms. Lifton indicated that

the for-profit corporation had
not generated a profit in four
years, but certainly has
been generating operating
revenue.
