FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 1991
Local Columnist
I
ou can't just take from
the customers," said
Nino Chiuchiarelli.
"You've got to give something
back."
It's a big reason why
customers return to Nino's
Ristorante on 13 Mile just
west of Hayes . . . His
philosophy is centered with
honesty by continual im-
provements in ways to make
them happier.
Latest is opening of Nino's
new enoteca (wine library)
with 16 aluminum spigots at-
tached to plastic tubes set in
wine bottles within a back
wall case . . . They are includ-
ed among the 40 different
wines available now by the
glass.
The area was a former ban-
quet room which Nino has
transformed into a 60-seat
region of intimacy and enjoy-
ment . . . serving only ap-
petizers and desserts.
His very cosmopolitan and
European-looking enotecta
has no bar, just tables and a
booth, while a piano stylist
plays Wednesday through
Saturday.
This is another dream come
true for Nino . . . His first was
two years ago when taking
over a former Shenanigans
and turning it into an east-
side Italian ristorante that
reeks with popularity.
He always hoped for the day
when that dream wine
library would become a reali-
ty . . . an enoteca like the
ones he remembered from Ita-
ly, only with a more moder-
nistic touch . . . Being short
on funds is no crime and Nino
learned from his United
States Special Forces days in
Vietnam that patience has its
reward . . . Those who had it
in "Nam" stood a better
chance of survival . . . and
likewise it is in civilian life as
Nino has found out . . . His
restaurant and enoteca
dreams are long-awaited
fulfillments.
Regulars like Federal Pipe's
Herb Saperstein and court
reporter wife Audrey, and
Caucus Club partner Jerry
Cohen of J.C. Electric, enjoy
Nino's Ristorante . . . It's new
enoteca is not what you might
imagine for an Italian wine
bar . . . There are no hanging
Chianti bottles, no low lights
and dark paneling . . . In-
stead are mirrored walls, et-
ched glass dividers and sim-
ple wall hangings including
framed pictures.
y
Nino constantly makes im-
provements like the new
chairs, new wallpapering, cur-
tained divider with booths
and trelliswork, as he does
things many restaurateurs
would prefer neglecting.
Continuous remodeling and
the new enoteca make Nino a
proud man these days as he
"gives things back to his
customers?'
"10 GUYS And A Gal" is
the name of a group that
holds no meetings but has
already done credit to itself
with an excellent charitable
deed.
All are graduates of the
Central High January 1951
class who have established a
$10,000 all-expenses-paid
scholarship to Wayne State
University for a member of
the Central High class of
1991 . . . Requirements are
that the recipient must need

financial help, have pretty
good grades and strong
leadership potential.
The nine fellows have
another years-ago bond
besides being Central High
graduating classmates . . . All
were members of the A.Z.A.
B'nai B'rith Lt. Al Staub
Chapter 751 that met and
played basketball at the old
Jewish Community Center
on Woodward and Holbrook.
How did the one gal sneak
in? . . . After being told by
local labor arbitrator Don
Sugarman, coordinator of the
project, Bessie Levine Levin
said she wanted to be a
$1,000 participant.
With the 40th reunion ap-
proaching for this October at
The Roostertail, Don wrote
the guys in the old A.Z.A.
chapter . . . He located 17 of
the club's members, now
spread from Detroit to Israel,
who thought it was a great
idea.
One of the 10 fellows, Joel
Lubin, can be reached about
the upcoming 40th reunion
. . . 332-3100.
AFTER A LOT of years,
Willie "Buffalo" Ehrlich has
retired as maitre d' at the
Holiday Hotel and Casino in
Las Vegas . . . "Buff" will re-
main a Vegas resident
although coming here often
for his usual hometown visits.
THERE'S A BIG zipper by
Guys 'n Gals at Orchard Mall
on Orchard Lake Road . . . It's
to tell how collections are go-
ing for the store's second an-
nual Clothing Drive For The
Homeless.
Today from 10 a.m.-9 p.m.,
folks can trade in all jeans
(clean, without holes, even
though it's a fashion for
many) on a new pair at half-
price . . . End of the evening,
all jeans collected will be —•<
donated to Oakland County's
homeless.
Last year, Guys 'n Gals col-
lected over 400 pairs of jeans,
'plus other articles of clothing
brought for tax deductible
donation.
Slogan by Guys 'n Gals is
"Zip Up The Homeless" in a
very worthwhile endeavor
that deserves much support.
MUSIC AT John Wong's
Pearl City oriental restaurant
on 11 Mile between Lahser
and Telegraph is now Friday
and Saturday . . . with d.j.
Stuart Rogoff spinning
goodies for dancing in the
Pearl City lounge.
WHEN HEARING the
name Billy Rose, people auto-
matically think of one of the
best orchestra gents in this
area . . . He and his quartet
are community standards and
have been at Don Vargo's
1940 Chop House two years
after many sessions at a lot of
local spots.
But would you think of Bil-
ly Rose as a hot dog man, too?
. . . Probably not . . . That's
because very few know he and
son Gary, also an orchestra
leader, have hot dog stands
that they man during the day
in Dearborn.
Billy and Gary are quite
popular for theme parties .. .
with their music for sure .. .
but also anywhere hot dogs
are on the festive menu.
Billy had his hot dog cart at
the recent 16th Year party by
Grand Manor at Fairlane .. .
'50s was the theme with a d.j.
behind the biggest simulated
juke box I've ever seen, spin-
ning discs of the era while
kids wore clothes from back
then as they roller skated and
attempted to jitterbug . . .
Candies galore, bags to fill up,
popcorn, A & W hamburgers
and root beer and Billy's hot
dogs as he met so many peo-
ple whose affair his group
played.
CONGRATS ... to Gordon
and Fay Seedberg . . . on their
45th anniversary.

secutive year that Mel Ball
