One Magical Vacation,
For One
Magical Price
Some of the exhibits show
the grim reminders of the
camps. In one, assorted in-
truments of torture are on
display, including a finger
breaker, a pair of foot chains,
and some heavy metal tongs.
Another exhibit shows a
crumpled death camp
uniform, complete with
prison number. And there's
one full-size photo of a
frightened child, holding his
hands above his head as a
Nazi officer points a gun at
his back.
Then there's the humble
roll of toilet tissue in its own
separate display case. This ex-
hibit is titled "A Prisoner's
Diary." Looking closely,
visitors see tiny pin pricks in
the paper. As the explanatory
panels describe, this was the
diary of a prisoner of the
camps. Having no conven-
tional writing materials, he
kept his diary by painstaking-
ly pricking letters into the
toilet paper with a pin. The
prisoner died in the camp, but
his diary survived.
Visitors pause spellbound
and silent in front of such ex-
hibits. They are from foreign
countries and also natives of
Norway. "This is very impor-
tant for young people to see,"
says one mother from Oslo
who is here with her three
children. "A whole generation
has skipped all this. But I
want my children to know
and understand what it
meant."
The Museum of the Danish
Resistance Movement in
Copenhagen offers another
compelling look at Scandina-
vian resistance. The musuem,
complete with its own
sculpture garden, is situated
in Churchill Park near
downtown Copenhagen.
Inside, the exhibits recount
a courageous story. The
Danes, like the Norwegians,
relate the story with careful
attention to detail and with
varied displays, including
newspaper clippings, photos
and the actual objects of
resistance, from printing
presses to weapons.
This story, too, is told in se-
quence, starting with April 9,
1940, the same day as the
Norwegian attack, when the
Nazis attacked Denmark.
The tiny, flat and vulnerable
country yielded within hours.
But then slowly, the Danes
began to build a resistance
movement, which became one
of the most powerful in all of
Europe. This musuem docu-
ments its efforts in detail.
For example, there are
detailed displays of the
underground press, including
actual sturdy old printing
presses that were used to
.
