THREE WAYS TO

"The Sun Will Come
Out Tomorrow...
Bet Your
Bottom Dollar!"

AJC Praises
Bush Initiative

Washington (JTA) —In a
statement released by
Robert K. Lifton, president
of the American Jewish
Congress, the Jewish leader
welcomed President Bush's
proposal to "limit the supply
and spread of arms in the
Middle East" and
characterized it as a
"positive first step to curb
the flow of arms to the area."
The full text of the state-
ment follows:
" We welcome President
Bush's proposal to limit the
supply and spread of arms in
the Middle East. It was
made abundantly clear dur-
ing the recent Persian Gulf
crisis that the unbridled
arms race in that part of the
world not only poses a
danger for Middle Eastern
countries but threatens
global stability.
"President Bush's pro-
posal to convene an interna-
tional conference is a
positive first step to curb the
flow of arms to the area. But
to be effective, this proposal
must carefully consider the
realities and disparities of
this volatile region. An arms
control program that is not
carefully crafted, or not uni-
versally accepted, will create
opportunities for rogue
nations to continue to
profiteer in arms and put at
risk those states who would
abide by arms control mea-
sures.
"The citizens of Israel,
having experienced five
wars, continue to be the
potential victims of the tons
of military hardware amass-
ed by its enemies. When an
arms control package is
structured, it must be re-
membered that Israel is
singularly vulnerable, sur-
rounded by hostile
neighbors, all of whom, with
one exception, are in a state
of war with it.
" We are heartened by the
statements coming out of
Jerusalem and Washington
which indicate both nations'
willingness to work together
to eliminate the potential for
destruction in the Middle
East. We hope that other
nations in the region are as
forthcoming."

We should get out of the
ghetto, but we should get out
as Jews, with our own spiri-
tual treasures.We should
interchange, give and take,
but not beg. Ghetto is im-
potence. Cultural cross-fer-
tilization is the only possibil-
ity for human development.
