to defend Saudi Arabia are
welcome? But those who
come only for a friendly
visit (even a Senator) must
show evidence that they
support the Saudis' em-
bargo and boycott against
Israel?
The craven and obse-
quious response of the
State Department to this
unconscionable state of af-
fairs is an insult to the com-
mon sense of the American
people.
The lessons from the
media and the defiled public
opinion always prove that it
is easier to get an audience
for hatred of Jews than by
exposing the type of hypoc-
risy noted by Mr. Rangell.
The facts he calls attention
to were never political or
diplomatic secrets. How can
they be made known with
widespread condemnation of
Saudi hatreds? This con-
tinues among the respon-
sibilities of all justice-
seeking Americans.
The favored nation status
that was attained by Saudi
Arabia in Desert Storm
should not be permitted to
mislead us into seeing even
a minor measure of
humanism. The Saudis'
brutal record remains horri-
fying. Insofar as Israel is
concerned, Saudi Arabia re-
tains its horrifying record. A
warning is in the following,
headlined " Saudis Approve
Taking Israeli Hostages"
from the current issue of
AIPAC's Near East Report
(May 13).

In 1979, the UN General
Assembly adopted the
International Convention
Against the Taking of
Hostages. It took nearly
12 years, but Saudi
Arabia finally signed the
convention with the
following reservation:
"The accession of the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
to the Convention does
not constitute a recogni-
tion of Israel and does not
lead to entering into any
transactions or the estab-
lishment of any relations
based on this conven-
tion."
The Saudis took this
confidence-building mea-
sure on March 25.
The continuing of such
flirting with diplomacy on
the lowest imaginable scale
keeps compelling the vig-
ilance that is needed to be on
guard against the venom of
Arab Jew-baiting. D
