TM NEXT VITIP I n one of the most dra- matic historic occur- rences, marking the nearing of a total end to the exile of a Jewish community, Zionism attained fulfillment as the greatest factor in lib- ertarianism. The transfer in a matter of hours, in 40 planes, of 14,000 Ethiopian Jews, will never be reduced to a mere episode in history. It is a realization of redemp- tion as a synonym for Zion- ism in the sense of receiving and preserving Jewry. Continuing on the heels of the Soviet Operation Exodus and the settlement in Israel of hundreds of thousands of Soviet Jews, the new Opera- tion Solomon uplifts libera- tion to new heights. The Ethiopian rescue means an end to 2,500 years of existence by Jews there since the time of Solomon. A long history needs to be recalled for an awareness of the fate of our fellow Jews in that far-off land. An eminent Jewish scholar, Professor Jacques Faitlovitch, was en- couraged by Baron Edmond de Rothchild to go to Ethio- pia (Abyssinia) to learn about the Jews there. They were first referred to as Falashas, which means "strangers," a term that later became hateful to them. It is translated as "exile" and "immigrant." This in itself is both shock- ing and outrageous in refer- ence to a people with a 2,500 year history in the area. What is happening is that we are ending exile and homelessness, fulfilling the Zionist ideal. Professor Faitlovitch commenced his efforts with the formation of the Ameri- can Pro-Falasha Committee. The leading American Jews became involved. Its organizer came to Detroit for ,/ the project, and I worked with him on it in 1922 and 1923 as editor of the Detroit Jewish Chronicle. It is a record not to be forgotten in the history of Jewish redemption. Call The Jewish News 354.5959 Hatred of Jews has become such a normalcy in Arab quarters that conceding it in dilpomatic quarters becomes the lowest type of hypocrisy. It has become especially true in the manner in which Saudi Arabia continues to treat American Jews when they are selected for official assignment to the Saudis. The shameful way in which Saudi Arabia has been indicated for many years in exposures shows how such Arab anti- Israelism also becomes the lowest form of anti- Semitism. The manner in which the Saudi anti-Israel anti- Semitism converts into American diplomatic hypoc- risy invited public attention again in a letter published in the New York Times (May 16). The letter, composed by Meyer Rangell of Bloom- ingburg, N.Y., was entitled "Injury To Insult" by the Times. Mr. Rangell wrote the following indictment: Small events, perhaps in- significant in themselves, sometimes serve to il- luminate the larger picture. Such an event was the re- cent refusal of Saudi Arabia to honor the United States passport of Senator Frank Lautenberg because it contained an Israeli stamp. The Senator had traveled to Israel; he was therefore persona non grata in Saudi Arabia. The Saudis thus demeaned the official, solemn document of travel — issued by the United States Government to its free citizens to protect their rights while abroad — to pursue the policy of nonrecognition, embargo, boycott and hatred toward the State of Israel. And how did the United States respond to this in- sult? By a shabby device: the State Department is- sued the senator a new passport in which the Israeli stamp did not ap- pear! The Saudis must have smugly smiled in their small victory: the deceitful new passport was a moral victory for their policy. The irony will escape no one. A half million Ameri- can soldiers risked their lives to defend Saudi Arabia in the recent war. Were fresh passports, con- veniently free of any evi- dence or taint of Israeli
