criticism aside, though he
acknowledges the group's
ties, as cited in the Judis ar-
ticle, with Ramsey Clark.
The party worked with the
former attorney general to
oppose U.S. intervention in
the Persian Gulf, he says.
The two also are outspoken
critics of Israel.
Mr. Goldberg says that for
years he avoided bringing up
Zionism at family gather-
ings. Today his relatives are
less hostile to his views.
"A lot of Jews are uncom-
fortable with Israel," he
says. "How can you not be
when Israel is the occupying
force of 2 million Palestin-
ians?"
He believes Israel has
always been a tool for
Western aggression, first
British then American.
"And as long as Israel
plays the role of garrison
state for big oil and for the
U.S. government there will
never be peace between
Arabs and Jews," he says.
"No nation is free as long as
it is under the domination of
a system based on exploita-
tion."
Mr. Goldberg supports the
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization, saying its violence
has been limited and is the
result of "Palestinians being
driven out (of the country) by
the terrorism of the Israeli
government." The PLO, he
says, "is a symptom of the
problem. The source is
Israel's role."
Nations like the United
States that drop bombs on
innocent people are the real
terrorists, he says.

Zionism, like all other
problems, invariably stems
back to capitalist
imperialism, Mr. Goldberg
says. The Vietnam War was
started over "tin, tungsten
and magnesium." The Iraqi
war was based on oil.
"The Gulf War was never
about Iraq and Kuwait but
about profit for a handful of
Americans," he says. "When
the U.S. government sees
the Middle East, all it sees is
hundreds of thousands of
dollars of profits in oil."
He believes American
society is dominated by a
small number of billionaires
who "view the world as
something they can carve up
for their own profit."
Similarly, the introduction
of capitalism is responsible
for the Soviet Union's cur-
rent crises, he says. "Ten
years ago, homelessness and
hunger wasn't a problem
there."
If its office is any reflection
of its philosophy, the
Workers World Party is cer-
tainly not interested in the
creature comforts that
monetary profit can provide.
The office is located in
downtown Detroit, on Grand
River near Cass, in an un-
marked building. Ample
parking space nearby is
always available.
Inside, the office consists of
a large room decorated with
pictures of Malcolm X and
the Rev. Martin Luther
King. There are posters for
the "Palestine Democratic
Women's Organization" and
one reading: "End the U.S.
Occupation of the Middle
