Boom Times For
Rabbinate

ARTHUR J. MAGIDA

Special to The Jewish News

A

ccording to The New
York Times, the rab-
binate is the new hot
profession for young Jews.
A front-page story by
Times' religion reporter Ari
Goldman states that ap-
plications to rabbinical
seminaries have reached
record levels because col-
1 ege- a ge Jews are
"disenchanted" with careers
in law, medicine and busi-
ness and because they are
"searching for something
more satisfying and often as
remunerative."
The "explosion of interest"
in the rabbinate is occurring
in the Reform and Conser-
vative seminaries, where,
compared to last year, ap-
plications are up 20 and 40
percent, respectively.

stitution affiliated with
Yeshiva University in
Manhattan, have been
steady for several years.
Luckily for those bound to
Reform and Conservative
seminaries, starting salaries
are often competitive to those
in other professions that
traditionally appeal to Jews.
Last year's starting salary
for graduates from the Con-
servative movement's Jew-
ish Theological Seminary
was $60,000. Salary
packages of $100,000, wrote
Mr. Goldman, are
"common" for experienced
Reform and Conservative
rabbis and "some earn twice
that amount."
The boom in the rabbinate,
according to the Times
reporter, is not matched in
Protestant seminaries,
where admissions for min-
isterial training have been
steady for two decades, or in
Catholic seminaries, where
admissions have declined.

Maybe Madonna
Should Convert

Bravo to New Republic
senior editor Jacob
Weisberg!
In a mere 17 column in-
ches, he did the near-
impossible by maintaining
coherence while dropping
such disparate names as
Lenny Bruce, Secretary of
Housing Jack Kemp,
baseball greats Hank
Greenberg and Sandy
Koufax, rock greats Bruce
Springsteen, Ringo Starr
and Fleetwood Mac, plus a
stupid line from radio talk
show czar, Larry King.
The occasion for Mr.
Weisberg's nomenclatural
feast was the Gala Inau-
gural Dinner of the B'nai
B'rith Sports Hall of Fame,
which opened with a Wash-
ington cantor warbling
"Hatikvah" and "Take Me
Out To The Ball Game."
Master of ceremonies
Larry King then told the
crowd, "When my dear
friend, (Washington
restaurateur) Duke Zeibert
told me that the B'nai B'rith
was going to have this
wonderful idea for a hall of
fame to honor Jewish sports
heroes, I felt particularly
attuned to it, having grown
up in this terrific faith."

Arthur J. Magida is senior
writer for the Baltimore Jew-
ish Times.

Madonna: Very goyish?

"Would you buy a used
creed from this man?" a
cringing Mr. Weisberg asked.
Bringing the monologue
up to the rock 'n roll present
and thinking he may have
stumbled onto another Jew-
ish Hall of Fame, Mr.
Weisberg wrote, "Bruce Spr-
ingsteen, I'm sorry to say,
definitely isn't (Jewish) .. .
Ringo Starr was often
believed to be Jewish be-
cause of his large schnoz and
sense of humor. None of the
Rolling Stones is. In the
spirit of Lenny Bruce, it's
reasonable to assert that
Elvis Costello is Jewish.
Marvin Gaye was also a Jew.
New Kids on the Block are
goyish. Madonna is very
goyish."
