said. "He was, after all, a Ger-
man general, and Chris only
wore it for his press con-
ference."
Chris' father, Peter Bras-
seur, who's from Belgium,
said Chris' grandmother was
imprisoned for her activities
in the Resistance.
"I know Chris had made a
swastika for his costume, and
I did find it a bit offensive, but
I don't believe we should ig-
nore the past and pretend it
didn't happen," Mr. Brasseur
said.
Mr. Lepler said there were
historical figures he would
have censored.
"Had one of my students
decided to dress as Lee
Harvey Oswald or Al Capone,
I would have said no," he said.
"But I didn't find anything in-
appropriate in Chris' choice."
Gilda Jacobs, a Huntington
Woods city commissioner,
whose daughter Jessica is in
Mr. Lepler's class, said she
didn't remember seeing
Chris' costume.
"I get upset when I see a
swastika. Who doesn't?" Mrs.
Jacobs said. "But you have to
take it in the proper context.
This wasn't anti-Semitic. And
I know Barry (Mr. Lepler) and
he wouldn't steer a child
wrong."
Jessica, 12, who dressed as
Claude Monet, the French
impressionist painter, said
she didn't think to say
anything in class, but admit-
ted she wondered privately
about the propriety of wear-
ing a swastika to school.
"I understand why Chris
chose Rommel. I mean, he
didn't have anything to do
with killing Jews," Jessica
said. "But wearing that sym-
bol still seems a little con-
tradictory to what the
general supposedly stood for."
Josh Band, 12, who dressed
like film mogul Steven Sp-
eilberg, disagreed.
"Even if Rommel was one of
the bad guys," Josh said,
"Chris still had the right to
do him under freedom of
speech." C
