Writer Needed
Reality Check
It is unfortunate that before
the writer of the May 31
editorial ("Reality Check")
wrote his piece, he failed to do
his own "reality check."
While the Jewish Communi-
ty Council has indeed been at
the forefront of our communi-
ty in its support for Israel,
particularly when Israel's
very existence was in jeopar-
dy, that support by no means
precludes an unwavering
commitment to intergroup
relations.
The Jewish News made no
attempt to contact the Coun-
cil to ascertain what we do to
promote respect and under-
standing between our and
other ethnic groups. Rather
than assuming that the
Council's intergroup relations
activities were confined to
"an occasional cross-cultural
dinner," the writer could even
have glanced ahead 60 pages
in his own paper and
discovered, in the Council's
annual report to the com-
munity, a small sampling of
the many and varied ac-
tivities which bring groups in
our community closer
together.
It is especially ironic that
the cover story on Peter Jen-
nings in the same edition of
The Jewish News was pro-
moted by a radio ad campaign
which only divides the Arab
and Jewish communities fur-
ther. In fact, the director of a
prominent local Arab-
American organization called
the Jewish Community Coun-
cil to enlist our help in repair-
ing the damage caused by the
ads.
Our relationship with this
organization is but one of the
many ongoing activities
which do not make the front
page of The Jewish News, but
which are central to our mis-
sion, and in which we take
great pride.
Clearly, more work needs to
be done in the vitally impor-
tant area of inter-ethnic rela-
tions. In the past several
years, the Council has at-
tracted many people who are
dedicated to this issue.
However, an editorial such as
this one can only discourage
those individuals. One does
not encourage positive efforts
by lambasting those who are
making those efforts.
A reality check is indeed in
order — by The Jewish News.

'Peace—Arab Style'
Was Not Needed
I have been a subscriber to
The Jewish News for many
years, and have enjoyed
reading most articles. How-
ever, I strongly resent the ar-
ticle captioned: "Peace —
Arab Style," on the front page
May 24, followed by pages of
pictures and undignified
remarks by local Arabs.
As an ardent Zionist, I
question why we have to
listen to a repeat performance
of giving up land for peace
and giving the Arabs a
Palestinian state.
In this lengthy article,
nothing is mentioned of the
22 Arab states already in ex-
istence that could easily ab-
sorb the Palestinians.
I feel saddened, after being
pressured by all our enemies
and Secretary Baker includ-
ed, to have read about what
Arabs believe is necessary for
Middle East peace for the
Israelis.
Of course, as a Jewess, I am
definitely interested in
positive comments pertaining
to our beautiful Jewish home-
land.

Why Deniers
Every Week?
The Mishnah in Avos,
Chapter 2, verse 19, states,
"Rabbi Elazar says know the
answer to a denier." It seems
that our Detroit Jewish News
takes the opposite approach.
Week after week, you give top
billing and a front page forum
to those who would deny
Jewish rights and the justice
of our cause.
May 24, it is a group of
Arabs telling us what they
would like in order to achieve
"peace." May 31, it is Peter
Jennings, a leader in the cam-
paign to discredit the State of
Israel.
Your interview with the
various Arabs, in the Middle
East and the Detroit region,
required extensive answers,
but as you will not give me
the space to answer all of
them, I would like to deal
with one issue raised. A Mr.
Kattad is quoted linking the
