Swidler Gallery Platter Exhibit Swidler Gallery will host an exhibition of platters by 33 American artists in On the Table/On the Wall: The Plat- ter. The invitational, featur- ing works within the tradi- tions of utilitarian and decorative arts, will open June 1, with a reception from 6-8:30 p.m.; the show will con- tinue through July 13. The strong horizontal volume of the platter offers the artist an expanse of open space unlike any other vessel oriented form, but real space unlike the painter's canvas. Today's American artists ex- plore the platter within tradi- tions of utilitarian pottery and the decorative arts. The exhibition will feature Rob Barnard's anagama- fired, Michael Simon's quiet- ly decorated and salt-fired and Kathryn Sharbaugh's precisely decorated useable platters. Also featured will be Peter Voulkos with an abstract expressionist piece with pierced holes from 1973, Robert Sperry with two cir- cular platters with flowing crackled slip, and Mary Jo Boles' high relief decoration on a rococo theme. Featured from Michigan will be Simona Alexandrov, Oak Park; John Glick, Farm- ington Hills; Paul Kotula, Huntington Woods; Diana Kulisek, Detroit; Kathryn Sharbaugh, Flint; Susanne Stephenson, Ann Arbor and Marie Woo, Bloomfield Hills. Swidler Gallery is located at 308 West Fourth Street in the Washington Square Plaza in downtown Royal Oak. Gallery hours are Tues.-Sat 11 a.m.-5 -p.m. For informa- tion, call 542-4880.
