in the Midwest, Merry Silber
also became interested in the
art of quilting. Merry Silber,
of Birmingham, now collects
and sells quilts and curated
this local exhibit.
"I've been lecturing for 10
years and I'm very nervous,"
Julie Silber said. "I think it
has something to do with the
person who introduced me."
Her mother introduced

FLINT HOMECOMING
The troops in the Gulf
didn't get 24-hour news
reports during the Persian
Gulf war. But Flint native
Wayne Hallem, a U.S.
Marine captain and
helicopter pilot who was
deployed in the Gulf for
seven months, was able to
pick up some reports from
CNN on his portable radio.
Speaking before 125 peo-
ple from Flint's Jewish So-
cial Services' May 23 annual
meeting and installation of
officers, Capt. Hallem, now
of Tustin, Calif., added he
was stunned when he heard
news reports that Tiger an-
nouncer Ernie Harwell was
fired. It was quite disturbing
news to the lifelong Tiger
fan.
Flying into town especially
for Capt. Hallem's home-
coming weekend were his
grandmother, Sadie Steltzer,
and aunt and uncle, Mort
and Thelma Soppe, all
from Florida. Also spotted
in the crowd were Capt.
Hallem's mother and her hus-
band, Joan and Nathan
Shafer; brother, Joe Hallem;
father, James Hallem;
aunt, Judy Mallon; JSS
president Raymond
Failer; immediate past pres-
ident Robert Segar; JSS
executive director David
Nussbaum; assistant direc-
tor Judy Kasle and her
husband, Frank; and
Debby Chimovitz, JSS
public relations director.
MIKVAH DINNER
Some 350 men and women
braved the thunder and
lightning to attend the
Women's Orthodox League
and Mikvah Israel annual
dinner, held May 12 at Con-
gregation Dovid Ben
Nuchim. Moshe Fine,
Mikvah Israel president,
delivered greetings. Rabbi
Binyomin Benjamin was
master of ceremonies.
Spotted in the crowd were
Mr. and Mrs. Jorge Brea,
Mr. and Mrs. Steven
Cohen, Dr. and Mrs. Jef-
frey Last, Dr. and Mrs.
Eric Peterson, Dr. and
Mrs. Myer Roszler and Mr.
and Mrs. Alex Ungar.
