MEXICANTOWN has
taken a long backseat to
Detroit's famed Greektown,
but is finally beginning to
come into its own with promo-
tional endeavor.
Its Mexicantown Fiesta '91,
weekend of June 21, 22, 23 is
set for Bagley and 21st, two
blocks north of the Am-
bassador Bridge, highlighted
by a traditional Mexican
charreada, the colorful
pageant of singing charros
(Mexican cowboys), women's
side saddle team, roping ex-
hibitions, a mariachi band
and folkloric dance troupe .. .
four two-hour shows will be
narrated in both English and
Spanish . . . and the first time
a charreada has ever taken
place within 1,000 miles of
Detroit.
There'll be an admission
charge for the charreada, but
the festival is free . . . in-
cluding a mercado adjacent to
the new Fiesta Gardens plaza
featuring Hispanic artists,
imported goods, ethnic food
and a children's activity
center.

A lot of camera
clickers ... even
one who took
some until
discovering that
she never removed
the cap.

Local and community per-
formers will provide free
entertainment throughout
the festival.
That new Fiesta Gardens
courtyard plaza, by the way,
will mark the first phase of
the re-birth of the Bagley
Street commercial district.

umns of yesteryears .. .
NOV. 2, 1956 . . . "An
employee at his furniture
store was getting married and
invited Rube Katz and his
wife Ida . . . When the date
came they took their little
daughter Jeanne along and
are happy to say she acted
like a perfect lady, not saying
a word . . . except for one in-
stance . . . While sitting in
the church watching the wed-
ding, she suddenly exclaimed,
`Mommy, has the lady chang-
ed her mind?' . . . Ida asked
what she meant, and little
Jeanne replied, 'Well, she
went up the aisle with one
man and came back with
another.' "

usual, the children wearing
Loretta Lorion clothes almost
"stole the show" again .. .
getting the largest applause
and biggest collection of
camera-clickers.
The 35th annual donor lun-
cheon by sisterhood of Con-
gregation Beth Shalom in
Oak Park was another
showcase for Leah Marks and
a good fast-moving fashion
show.
It was again evident that
metropolitan Detroit is not
only unsung for its galaxy of
good restaurants . . . but
styles, too . . . They were
presented in well-paced coor-
dination by beautifully-poised
models wearing John Darak-
jian jewelry, clothes from
Eleganza, Leotards Et
Cetera, Valentina and Your
Image . . . with makeup by
Malibu and hair by Belissima
Too.
People didn't realize that
they were seeing a "first" in
Leah Marks productions .. .
It didn't start off with dancing
. . . The clever beginning had
a gardener theme with gent
pouring "water" from a can to
wake up the flowering
models.
Hats look to be in . . . but as
far as I'm concerned, most of
those being shown today
should be out . . . They hide
the face too much . . . Nothing
like pretty models with pret-
ty smiles . . . It does so much
for the fashion they're
showing.
Captain Rik Jagger, 98.3
F.M. d.j., did a fine job with
his clever and humorous
banter before and during the
show.
A lot of camera clickers .. .
even one who took some un-
til discovering that she never
removed the cap . . . Luckily,
her hubby's cap was off for his
many pics . . . About 300 men
and women enjoyed the lun-
cheon prepared by Phil Tewel
and his Jewel Kosher Cater-
ing . . . Ever think there'd be
too many door prizes? . . . It
seemed that way . . . Honor-
ing Sophie Pearlstein,
sisterhood president 1973-75,
was a good choice.
A couple of proud hubbies
. . . Jerry Abels with a video
camera, whose wife, Marcia,
was donor co-chairperson .. .
Lynn Rich was chairgal .. .
and Iry Herman, husband of
Helen Herman, sisterhood
president and donor commit-
tee head . . . Incoming presi-
dent, Gloria Ellis, was elected
night before the luncheon.
Music was with a nice soft
beat . . . and a long runway
with "wings" for the well-
moving models to whirl and
walk with enthusiasm.
The kids were a show in
themselves . . . waving and
