ED srael and World Jewry

Our commitment to Israel and Jews around the world was stronger and
more urgently needed than ever before.

More than 3,000 people expressed their support for Israel and the
Allied troops during the Persian Gulf War at the Solidarity Sunday Rally,
cosponsored by the Council and the Jewish Welfare Federation.

Council and Federation led the Yachad (together) trip to Israel
immediately following the war.

Our Task Force on College-Related Issues designed and distributed
thousands of copies of five new informational flyers on Israel to college
students at several area universities.

We brought to Detroit several Israelis, including a several-day Israel
tourism promotion with Jerusalem expert Yitzchak Yaacobi, who
garnered extensive media coverage.

Thousands attended the Council- sponsored Israel Travel and Trade
Fair as part of Israel Independence Day activities at the Jewish
Community Center (Maple/Drake).

Martin Raffel of the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory
Council spoke at a Council-sponsored leadership meeting on support
for Israel.

The Council, at the request of the Soviet Jewry Committee, sent
almost 600 menorahs, with candles and dreydels, to the Minsk Jewish
community. We also sent Professor Zvi Gitelman to Minsk in
December, who presented a plan to the Council for improving Jewish
life for Minsk Jews.

Hopes, prayers and hard work brought Israel through yet another crisis,
and Jews from such disparate places as the Soviet Union, Albania and
Ethiopia saw their dream of freedom attained.
