Los Angeles (JTA) —
While demographers be-
moan the low Jewish bir-
thrate, the congregation of
Mishkon Tephilo in the Pa-
cific oceanfront community
of Venice is doing something
about it.
Mishkon Tephilo, which
bills itself as "A Par-
ticipatory Conservative
Synagogue," has announced
creation of a $100,000 trust
fund.
The money, though not
blatantly devoted to the pro-
pagation of the species, will
at least, it is hoped, en-
courage younger couples of
childbearing age to join the
congregation.
Under the terms of the
fund, couples bearing or
adopting a child during a
given Jewish calendar year
will share in the 8.25 per-
cent interest earned annu-
ally by the fund. Temple
members Louis and Dorothy
Gold, who put up the
$100,000, view the dividend
as "a kind of first birthday
present," and hope it will be
applied to the infants' future
Jewish education.
There are no strings
attached to the so-called
L'Chaim Fund, except that
the parents must be
Mishkon Tephilo members
in good standing at the time
of the child's arrival.
Louis Gold, 93, has a histo-
ry of innovative endeavors.
He has been a hair stylist,
banker, sculptor and inven-
tor, among other occupa-
tions. It was Gold who in-
vented the permanent wave
process on which modern
"perms" are based.

Arab Killer Gets
Four Life Terms

Jerusalem (JTA) — A Gaza
Arab who stabbed four Jew-
ish women to death in
Jerusalem's Kiryat Yovel
neighborhood was given four
life sentences in magistrate
court.
Judge Ya'acov Bazak, who
pronounced the sentences,
said he wished he had the
legal power to impose the
death penalty on the defen-
dant, 26-year-old Mohamm-
ed Abu-Jalala, a resident of
the Jabalya refugee camp in
the Gaza Strip.
Israel does not have capi-
tal punishment, except for
crimes perpetrated during
the Holocaust. Only days
after the stabbings, the
Knesset decisively rejected
the death penalty for ter-
rorists.
