with a knee injury. He bats
fourth and started the year
hitting .538, 7-for-13, with
one home run and seven RBI.
Junior Keith Lewiston is a
starting pitcher and out-
fielder. The left-hander is a
fastball-curveball pitcher.
Pitcher David Ettlinger has
cracked the Lakers' starting
rotation in his sophomore
year. Ettlinger, a .300-plus
hitter who also plays outfield,
had his strongest offensive
day on May 10, going 5-for-8
in a doubleheader against
Rochester Adams.
Junior Mike Fleicher began
the season at catcher but
moved to the outfield after
developing a sore arm. The
Laker roster also includes
senior reserves Ryan Jaffee,
an outfielder and relief pit-
cher, and Adam Brown, who
does some pinch-hitting.
At Country Day, senior Ed-
die Wolkind is a fourth-year
varsity player. He starts at se-
cond base or shortstop, does
some pitching and is a team
captain.
Sophomore Kevin Widlan-
sky is another young Baron
who Headblum is developing.
"He has a very good, live
arm" and throws a moving
fastball, Headblum said.
Headblum said varsity com-
petition should make Widlan-

Southfield-Lathrup boasts
three senior Jewish players,
including third-year starter
Adam Niskar. A senior cat-
cher, Niskar bats leadoff and
was hitting .370 with 10
steals and 11 runs scored.
Craig Sukenic started slow-
ly at the bat, hitting .227.
"But he's starting to hit the
ball much better," said S.L.
coach Bob Marten, who call-
ed Sukenic "really improved"
in the last year. Sukenic
starts at first base, a position
he began playing last
summer.
Joe Jonas is a backup out-
fielder with a good glove. "We
try to put him in the late in-
nings as a defensive player,"
Marten said. "He's got pretty
good speed and range in the
outfield."
Birmingham Groves' Jason
Katz, a junior, starts at third
base and does some relief pit-
ching. Katz was hitting .400,
6-for-15, with five RBI.
Of Bloomfield Hills An-
dover's five Jewish players,
the best may be the youngest,
freshman Shawn Rubin.
Coach Tom Headblum
brought Rubin up from the
junior varsity early in the
season, and Rubin has been
the Barons' starting catcher
in most of the games since he
arrived.
