Israel TV
To USSR
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel
Television will soon beam
programs to the Soviet
Union, via satellite, to pro-
vide potential immigrants
and other Soviet Jews with
information about Israel.
The plan was announced
by Education Minister
Zevulun Hammer, who has
parliamentary responsibili-
ty for the Israel Broad-
casting Authority.
IBA Chairman Aharon
Harel and Director General
Arye Meckel are in the
Soviet Union making the
technical arrangements.
The broadcasts will not be
available on home television
sets.
IBA officials said they
would rent time on a Soviet
communications satellite
called Intersputnik, which
will relay the programs to
some 200 pickup points, such
as Jewish community
centers, schools and cultural
clubs in the Soviet Union.
He said they would include
a course in basic Hebrew,
and documentaries on
Judaism, Zionism and
Israel.
The broadcasts will also
provide up-to-date informa-
tion about housing and job
availability in Israel, school-
ing and university re-
quirements.
Rabbi's Son
Charges Deri
Jerusalem (JTA) — Ac-
cusations by the son of a
leading Sephardic rabbi
against two ministers of the
Orthodox Shas party have
thrown the party into tur-
moil and reportedly caused a
rift with his parents.
Rabbi Ya'acov Yosef of
Jerusalem, oldest of the 10
children of former Sephardic
Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef,
publicly charged Interior
Minister Arye Deri and
Communications Minister
Rafael Pinhasi with finan-
cial improprieties.
Mr. Deri and Mr. Pinhasi
have been under police in-
vestigation for nearly a year
for alleged malfeasance. Mr.
Deri is suspected of channel-
ing his ministry's funds to
certain favored religious in-
stitutions supported by
Shas.
Police investigators re-
cently submitted their
report to the state pros-
ecutor, who is expected to
decide by next month
whether to bring formal
charges against the min-
isters.
