Theological Seminary
Honors Detroit Leaders

Leaders in the Detroit area
will be honored by the Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America June 12 at their an-
nual community-wide dinner
at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek.
Dr. Jason and Pearlena
Bodzin, of Congregation
B'nai Moshe; Drs. Paul and
Barbara Goodman, Congrega-
tion Beth Shalom; Julius and
Sylvia Pollak, Adat Shalom
Synagogue; Dr. Warren and
Charlotte Tessler, Congrega-
tion Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses; and Harvey and
Lucille Weisberg, Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek, will be
presented with the
Seminary's Second Century
Award for their commitment
to the community in fostering
the religious and cultural
traditions of Conservative
Judaism.
Presenting the awards to
the honorees will be Laurence
Rubinstein, senior vice presi-
dent for development, the
Jewish Theological Seminary.
Harold Berry is general
chairman, and dinner
chairmen are Joel Gershen-
son and Dr. Alden Leib.
Dr. Jason and Pearlena
Bodzin have participated in
numerous B'nai Moshe ac-
tivities. Pearlena is recording
secretary, youth commission
chairperson and past sister-
hood president. Dr. Jason
Bodzin is a past president,
Detroit Surgical Association;
treasurer, Midwest Surgical
Association; member Scien-
tific Advisory Committee, Na-
tional Foundation for Ileitis
and Colitis, Michigan
Branch.
Drs. Paul and Barbara
Goodman are long-time
members of Beth Shalom, and
Barbara has also served as a
past president of the
synagogue. She was past
president of United Hebrew
Schools. Paul Goodman is
director of laboratories at
William Beaumont Troy
Hospital.
Julius and Sylvia Pollak
have been active members of
Adat Shalom for many years.
Julius retired from Vienna

Wholesale Distributors,
where he served as president
of the company. His com-
munal involvements include
Boy Scouts of America,
member of B'nai B'rith for
five decades, and serving as
Deputy Sheriff of Wayne
County. Sylvia Pollak, has
concerned herself with the
March of Dimes and
Hadassah. The Pollaks were
instrumental in bringing out
individuals during the
Holocaust.

Dr. Warren Tessler is presi-
dent of Congregation Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses, and
Charlotte Thssler serves on its
board. Dr. Tessler's profes-
sional and communal ac-
tivities include member of
Alpha Omega Dental Frater-
nity; co-chair, dental division,
Allied Jewish Campaign;
BAHM co-chairman of, the
Jewish Theological Seminary
Annual Awards Dinner and a
member of the Seminary.
Detroit Board; and vice presi-
dent of Michigan Region,
United Synagogue of
America. Charlotte Tessler
has a long-time commitment
to Hillel Day School. She is a
member of the board of direc-
tors, Jewish Women's Divi-
sion; board member, JARC;
educational chairperson of
the Seminary; board member
American Friends of Hebrew
University; past BAHM co-
chairperson, Seminary An-
nual Awards Dinner; and

Seminary Detroit board
member.
Harvey and Lucille Weis-
berg have been involved
members of Shaarey Zedek
for over 40 years. Harvey
Weisberg is a past president,
board of trustees member
since 1961 and endowment
board member. The Weisbergs
have both held leadership
roles in Jewish education,
Jewish Experiences for
Families, and the annual
Peter and Clara Weisberg
concert. Harvey is an
honorary life ADL National
Commissioner and ADL
Michigan Regional board
member; and serves on the
boards of Center for the Study
of the Child and American-
Israel Chamber of Commerce.
He has been the chairman of
the food division of the Allied
Jewish Campaign, chairman
of the broadcast division of
the Jewish Community Coun-
cil and president of the Henry
Morgenthau Lodge of B'nai
B'rith. He has served on the
boards of the Jewish Welfare
Federation, United Jewish
Charities, Hillel Day School,
United Hebrew Schools and
on numerous Israel Bond
committees. He has been
chairman of the food division
and member of the advisory
board of the United Founda-
tion. Lucille serves as a board
member of the Women's Divi-
sion of Israel Bonds,
Hadassah, B'nai B'rith,
Brandeis and the Jewish
Family Service. For 10 years,
she was involved with
teaching English to Russian-
Jewish immigrants, and for 7

years she has served as a do-
cent at the Holocaust Memo-
rial Center. Harvey Weisberg
has participated in the dia-
logues and trialogues and in
the American-Arab-Jewish
Friends within the Greater
Detroit Interfaith Round
Table. He was president of the
Ecumenical Institute for
Jewish Christian Studies
from 1989-1991 and still
serves on its board.

JARC's Joyce Keller
Named Berman Honoree

Joyce Keller, executive
director of JARC, will receive
the community's fourth an-
nual Berman Award for
Outstanding Professional
Service.
Since 1978, when Ms.
Keller became executive
director of JARC, the agency
has grown from one group
home, three employees and a
$40,000 budget, to 13 homes
and 14 condominiums, 140
employees and a $4 million
budget.
Ms. Keller has initiated
volunteer programs for in-
dividuals and institutions.
More than 100 volunteers
help JARC homes prepare for
Passover each year. In addi-
tion, local congregations have
extended membership to
residents of JARC, enabling
many to attend services and
observe holidays.
In addition to her work
with JARC, Ms. Keller sits on
the boards of Forgotten
Harvest and the Coalition on
Temporary Shelter, and she
has been involved in a leader-
ship role with the Business
and Professional Women's
Division of the Allied Jewish
Campaign.
Nominees for the Berman
Award must have worked in
the Detroit Jewish communi-
ty a minimum of five years.
They must have demonstra-

ted the highest professional
standards in their chosen
field; made a contribution to
the general good of the
Jewish community; demon-
strated leadership and in-
novation in their profession
and applied creativity, dedica-
tion, knowledge and care to
providing services to the
Jewish community.
A committee of lay leaders
and professional colleagues,
chaired by Jewish Welfare
Federation President Mark
Schlussel, selected Ms. Keller.
She will be honored Aug. 27
at a meeting of the Jewish
Welfare Federation Board of
Governors.

ADL Creates Group
To Support Rescuers

The Michigan Office of the
Anti-Defamation League has
created a Michigan Chapter
of the Jewish Foundation For
Christian Rescuers. Linda
Soberman, president of the
Michigan board of the ADL,
appointed Fran Gross
(Linden) chair of the new
group, which will hold a kick-
off event 6 p.m. June 4 at the
Holocaust Memorial Center.
A private viewing of the
memorial center will be
followed by a talk by
Abraham H. Foxman, na-

tional director of the Anti-
Defamation League, and the
presentation of ADL's
Courage To Care awards to
Peter N. and Adrienna B. Mr-
maat; and to Ignacy, Helen
and Cezary Chorazyczewski,
who saved Jews from the
Nazis during the Holocaust.
The Jewish Foundation for
Christian Rescuers provides
monthly grants to over 700
needy rescuers in 13
countries.

Aish HaTorah Plans
Torah Fax Line

Fax-Of-Life, an Aish
HaTorah innovation, takes
advantage of fascimile
technology to transfer week-
ly Torah. Parsha sheets to
subscribers. At present,
several hundred people
subscribe throughout North
America.
The Fax-Of-Life consists of

an outline of the weekly
Torah portion, a listing of the
mitzvot contained therein,
and an idea taken from the
parsha.
