"I don't view him as anti-
Israel," she said. "And I
don't think he questions
Israel's right to exist. But I
do think he is more likely to
take on the role of journalist
and question, and I think he
does this with Israel. He
doesn't seem to accept sim-
ple explanations regarding
the Middle East because he
knows that nothing in the
Middle East is simple."
Osami Siblani, editor of
The Arab American News in
Dearborn, said that in the
Arab American community,
Mr. Jennings is just as pop-
ular as any other network
anchorman. He added that
he has followed Mr. Jenn-
ings' career since the Israeli
invasion of Lebanon in 1982.
It has been since the inva-
sion that Mr. Jennings has
been tagged "anti-Israel,"
according to Mr. Siblani.
"But I don't see any anti-
Israeli sentiments in any
way, shape or form," said
Mr. Siblani. "I think, in
general, he just comes across
as very informed. But look,
everyone's heard of these
rumors of Peter Jennings.
But who among us doesn't
have political views. We're
not angels, we still have our
views." El

Israeli Jobs
For Immigrants
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's
ministerial committee on
the economy has approved a
plan in which the govern-
ment would assume most of
the burden of providing
employment for new immi-
grants.
This represents a sharp
departure from the policy es-
tablished last year to leave
immigrant absorption to the
free market and is an admis-
sion, in effect, that the policy
failed.
According to preliminary
estimates by the Treasury,
the plan will cost over $2.16
billion. But it will not solve
Israel's overall problem of
unemployment, which was
rising even before most of
the new immigrants entered
the labor market.
There are presently an
estimated 100,000 jobless in
Israel, and the number in-
creases as immigrants pour-
ing into the country begin
looking for work.
Some would be employed
in large-scale, government-
sponsored economic devel-
opment projects, while
others would be given jobs at
some 30 to 40 large in-
dustrial plants, where the
state would pay their wages.
