anchor seems very aware. In his office at ABC, as an exer- cise bicycle stood on one side of the room and a photo of his 11-year-old daughter stood on a window sill on the other side, he was at somewhat of a loss about how to address the claims and counterclaims made about him. "What does one do?" he asked. "One does what one can to be fair and be objec- tive and be sure that the many sides of the story are told. As a journalist, it's vital for me to tell my au- dience that there are many truths involved in the Mid- dle East." But "fairness" also has many "sides" and many interpretations, especially for an issue as volatile, as convoluted and, for many, as personal as the Middle East. The mere lift of an eyebrow, the subtle pause of the voice, or the posing of a question that even its interrogator later acknowledges was "inappropriate" can per- suade some of Mr. Jennings' vast audience that "fairness" and balance have been subverted by a covert —and, to them, a very troublesome — politics. Such mannerisms and queries may especially per- suade those viewers who are already disposed to think the worst of the man that 90 percent of TV viewers rate as the most credible broad- caster in television. ❑ mmimmil NEWS 11•1 •••• Kohl, Havel Jewish Homage Bonn (JTA) — Chancellor Helmut Kohl of Germany and President Vaclav Havel of Czechoslovakia paid tribute to what Mr. Kohl called "the common past of Jewish heritage" in their countries.
