SIZZLING SUMMER

What is important now, of
course, is not to speculate
about what might have
been, but to seek a solution
to the problems that remain
after the flights from Addis
Ababa. The experience of re-
cent years indicates that
where absorption is concern-
ed, the older Ethiopians are
a lost cause; most of them
are from sleepy 12th century
villages and are unable to
adjust successfully to the
pace and lifestyle of bustling
20th century urban centers.
Younger Ethiopians,
however, are a different
story. They almost always
secure their place in society,
thanks in significant mea-
sure to their positive experi-
ences in the Israel Defense
Forces, where they are al-
ready making their mark,
particularly in the para-
troopers.
As a matter of fact, one of
the most heartwarming
aspects of Operation
Solomon was the way that
dozens of young Ethiopian
paratroopers were on hand
to lovingly receive their
bewildered brethren when
the latter stepped off the
planes that brought them to
Ben-Gurion Airport.
Also welcoming the
newcomers was our first E-
thiopian Cinderella, a beau-
tiful young woman who has
become a media favorite
after her recent marriage to
the son of former Police Min-
ister and Knesset Speaker
Shlomo Hillel.
The ugly religious con-
troversies over the Jew-
ishness of the Ethiopian
immigrants, which seriously
impeded their integration
some years ago, have, for-
tunately, almost completely
disappeared. Where the
Chief Rabbinate is concern-
ed, they are Jews in every
respect. Only some rabbis
continue to refer to them as
"falashas," which means
"stranger" in Amharic and
is roughly equivalent to call-
ing American Jews "kikes."
To be sure, where genetics
are concerned, there is some
question about the "Jewish
credentials" of the Ethiopi-
an Jews. According to
chromosomal studies carried
out in recent years they have
a different gene pool than
Jews from other countries.
This indicates that they are
probably the offspring of
converts to Judaism, not, as
legend has it, of King
Solomon and the Queen of
Sheba.
Be that as it may, their
devotion to Judaism is beyond
question. ❑
