The $15 screening will be performed by Sinai staff in the hospital's Outer Drive Lobby. Tay-Sachs is a rare genetic disease that a child inherits from both parents which causes progressive destruc- tion of the central nervous system and death by 5 years of age. There is no cure for Tay-Sachs disease. Most car- riers are Jews of Eastern European descent. Couples who are both car- riers of the Tay-Sachs gene can still have healthy children. Statistically, one- half of their off-spring will be carriers but not have the disease themselves. One- quarter will be completely unaffected, and one-quarter will have the Tay-Bach disease.
