You have seen... how I bore you
on eagles' wings...
Exodus, 194
Yemen. Morocco. Iraq. Albania. The
Soviet Union. Over the past 43 years,
Israel has worked miracles airlifting
Jews from danger and bringing them
home.
And now, we have witnessed the rescue
of 14,500 Ethiopian Jews from the midst of
war and famine and death, to be reunited
with loved ones in the land of their centuries-
old yearnings.
But even miracles can have a bottom
line. This extraordinary undertaking will
cost millions, not just for the airlift, but for
food, housing, medical care, schooling
and jobs -- millions that Israel's people
can ill afford now.
Should Israel have taken on the additional
burden of this rescue? Should we have to
reach deep, once again, to help?
There can be only one answer.
For that's what it means to be a Jew.
