retro styles and the clothing
that was popular when I was
younger held a great charm
for me. The coat was
definitely dated — too full,
too short, with too large a
shawl collar. I loved it.
However, when I got the
coat home, I couldn't imag-
ine when and where I would
actually wear it. I felt un-
comfortable wearing fur. I
decided to wear it under cover
of darkness on the late night
walks I took with my
husband.
That winter was the col-
dest in many years. But,
despite the cold, I could raise
the shawl collar around my
head, foregoing a hat and
feel enveloped and hugged.
No coat had ever kept me so
warm before and I knew that
it was not just the fur, but
the comfort of knowing that
it was shared with my
mother.
I wore the coat several
times before I thrust my
hand into the pocket as we
were about to walk out the
door one night. I felt some-
thing and stepped back into
the hallway to see what I
had discovered. It was a
yellowing book of matches
from the Hilton Hotel in
Chicago, where my parents
lived, and a small wear-
softened square of paper.
I unfolded the paper and
instantly, I recognized my
mother's European hand-
writing, tears springing to
my eyes. She had carefully
written down her name,
"Mrs. P. Nuss," her address
and phone number.
Why in the world ... and
suddenly it came to me. She
had always feared the loss of
her precious mink. Since the
coat bore no identification,
she had inscribed her name
on this little piece of paper,
hoping the note would help
the coat find its way home if
somehow they were parted.
It was 11 o'clock on a cold
winter night and I stood in
the hallway crying.
I was swaddled in my
mother's mink coat, clut-
ching to my face a scrap of
paper bearing her precious
writing which she had held
in her own hands who knew
how many years ago. I was
flooded with love and long-
ing for her, and something
else as well: the joy of
miraculously receiving a
note from my dear mother
whom I never expected to
hear from in this way again.
I felt peaceful as I raised
the shawl collar, pulled our
mink coat tighter, buttoned
those beautiful rhinestone
buttons, and went out into
the chilly night air for a
walk with my husband.
