11 Israelis Win
Israel Prize
Jerusalem (JTA) — Eleven
Israelis and one institution
were awarded the
prestigious Israel Prize last
week on the 43rd anniver-
sary of Israel's in-
dependence.
A special prize was given
to conductor Zubin Mehta,
the Indian-born maestro who
has been conductor and
musical director of the Israel
Philharmonic Orchestra
since the mid-1960s. He held
that position in tandem with
being music director of the
New York Philharmonic Or-
chestra, from which he is
resigning this season.
Mr. Mehta, who flew to
Israel at the outset of the
Gulf war, was awarded for
his contributions to music in
Israel. He did not qualify for
a regular Israel Prize only
because it is restricted to
citizens of Israel.
The Israel Prize is Israel's
highest civilian award.
This year's recipients are
Professor Haim Beinart, one
of the country's foremost
historians; Professor Naomi
Feinbrunn- Dotan, a pioneer
of botanical studies in Israel;
Justice Moshe Landau,
former president of the High
Court of Justice; and Pro-
fessor Daniel Friedman, a
leading jurist and author of
many studies on Israeli law.
Also, Professor Elhanan
Helfman, an economist; Pro-
fessor Shmuel Agmon, a
mathematician; Professor
Dov Fruman, a leading com-
puter engineer; Dvora Ber-
tonov, a veteran dancer;
popular actor Yossi Yadin;
Miriam Ben-Porat, a former
member of the High Court of
Justice and presently state
comptroller; and in-
dustrialist Stef Wertheimer.
The institution awarded
the prize was the Hesder
Yeshiva, which combines
rabbinic studies with
military training.
The biggest round of ap-
plause went to Justice Ben-
Porat, who has been much in
the public eye lately for her
report charging the Israel
Defense Force with having
distributed defective gas
masks to civilians during
the Persian Gulf crisis.
Asian News aper Runs
Anti-Semiti Article
Sydney, Australia (JTA) —
A viciously anti-Semitic ar-
ticle originally published in
the mass-circulation Hong
Kong Daily News has been
condemned by the
Australian Chinese Daily, a
locally published Chinese-
language newspaper that
reprinted it.
The newspaper's ad-
ministrative manager,
Charles Ng, said the article
was not typical of the Hong
Kong Daily News and said
the paper would publish a i.
clear and unequivocal ).
dissociation.
Robert Klarnet, public af-
fairs director of the New
South Wales Jewish - Board
of Deputies, said Australia's
Chinese community,
estimated to number over
200,000, had a history of
friendly relations with
Australian Jewry.
Publication of the article
was "an aberration," Mr.
Klarnet told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency. The au-
thor, who used the
pseudonym "Ah Wei"
(Mask), posed the question,
"Why did Hitler kill the
Jews?" and answered that
"Jews have been cursed by
God," the Jews "sold out
Jesus" and "Jewish people
know how to make profits"
better than anyone else.
"Everywhere they go they
make money and fleece peo-
ple," the anonymous author
claimed.
The author insisted, "I am
definitely not inciting racial
hatred. It is just that those
heartless, rich, cruel and
ruthless warmongers, selfish
and avaricious people exist
on this planet and unitedly
extort from and harm weak
peoples. This is a disaster for
humanity."

Love The Bomb
-
New York (JTA) — The
threat of non-conventional
warfare has apparently
prompted Israelis to offer
their Defense Ministry a vir-
tually unanimous endorse-
ment to develop nuclear
weaponry.
In a public opinion survey
conducted by Tel Aviv Uni-
versity's Jaffee Center for
Strategic Studies, 91 percent
of the respondents favored
the expansion of Israel's
nuclear capability, up by 15
percentage points from 1987.
