GUESS...

Bishop Links
Israel, Nazis

Jewish
New York (JTA)
leaders have expressed
outrage over statements
made by Bishop Charles
Vache of the Episcopal Dio-
cese of Southern Virginia
comparing the treatment of
Palestinians under the
Israeli government to that of
the Jews under Nazi Ger-
many.
The treatment of Palestin-
ians in Israel, Bishop Vache
wrote in his monthly letter
in the diocesan newspaper,
the Jamestown Cross,
"approaches genocide of the
type which the Jews experi-
enced in the late '30s and
early '40s in Germany.
Many of the same tactics are
now being used against the
Palestinians."
The bishop, who recently
returned from a trip to
Israel, claimed that Israel's
activities "erode the moral
fiber of the Israeli nation
and people," and that U.S.
support of Israel com-
promises our "moral integri-
ty."
"There are so many simi-
larities with what Hitler did
to the Jews," he said. "And
it's getting increasingly
worse.
"The churches were sinful-
ly silent then and millions
suffered," he wrote, "we
must speak out now."

The bishop's comparison of
Israel to the fascist Nazi
Germany outraged Jewish
leaders.
His attempt to "equate the
Holocaust -- the worst case of
mass murder in the history
of the world -- with Israel's
treatment of Palestinians is
simply beyond comprehen-
sion," declared Ira Gissen,
director of the regional office
of the Anti- Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith in a
letter sent to the bishop.

Bishop Vache called on
church members to write to
the highest U.S. government
officials and demand that
the government "limit its
aid to Israel until full civil
and human rights are
granted the one and a half
million Palestinians
residing in Israel, the West
Bank, Gaza and Golan
Heights."

The bishop said he has
tried to contact leaders from
the Virginia Jewish com-
munity to discuss his views,
but all his attempts have
been unsuccessful.
The difficulty he is having
in discussing the issue, he
believes, is partly due to an
attitude taken by some Jews
that "if you criticize the
Israeli government in any
way, you're anti-Semitic."
