visitor a clearer understan-
ding of the art of Israel and
that it will open an additional
window that will expose the
fascination, beauty and diver-
sity of life in our country."
Exhibition organizers hope
that the thematic eclecticism
of the art will encourage a
wide audience among both the
Jewish and gentile com-
munities. "One of the ways to
give people an understanding
of Israel is to look at the art
of the country," says Mr.
Busbey.
"This art exhibition is a
way of introducing the Jewish
community and its culture to
the rest of the metropolitan
area. When this is over,
hopefully we'll have put
Israeli art on the map and
made it a viable interest of the
entire metropolitan area," he
says.
The DIA owns a sculpture
by Zvi Goldstein entitled "Ele-
ment F-6." The 1987 work of
aluminum, formica and
enamel on steel was a
Founders Society purchase

tributors. Mr. van der Marck
hopes to augment the DIA's
permanent collection with a
post-minimalist sculpture
from the exhibit.
"I have my eyes on a work
by Michael Gitlin that is one
of four pieces. And I hope that
the other pieces will be snap-
ped up by local collectors. That
is sort of the secret, or maybe
not-so-secret agenda of this
whole thing," he says.
As a result of the exhibit,
Mr. Busbey thinks that future
Israeli art will be coming in-
to the DIA. "I think you'll
have a greater interest in the
community. And I think it's
important that they unders-
tand that the DIA is open
to including Israeli artists,
who up until this point in
time haven't achieved much
recognition on a worldwide
basis. It's quite an accomplish-
ment for the museum.
The exhibition is co-
sponsored by the American
Israel Education Institute, a
non-profit charitable corpora-
tion chartered to promote
cultural and economic ties bet-
ween the United States and
Israel. Honorary chairpersons
of the the event are Leon
Cohan, Jack Robinson,
Samuel Sachs II of the DIA,
Robert Sosnick and Anne M.
Spivak of the DIA and Martin
Weyl of the Israel Museum. ❑
