4 Great New ZOA Ways To

A Weather Report From Sunny!

Experience
Israel

"The Sun Will Come

museum displays 17 major
Chagall oil paintings, all por-
traying biblical scenes.
In luminous blues and
greens, the famous Jewish ar-
tist depicts scenes from
Genesis and Exodus in twelve
enormous canvases that hang
in the Great Hall.
Also in the museum are
sculptures of David and
Moses; bas-reliefs of Sarah,
Rebecca, Rachel and Leah;
stained glass windows and a
display of 200 of Chagall's
preliminary studies which led
to the large canvases.
- Another
sightseeing
highlight for the Jewish
traveler — though quite dif-
ferent — is the old Jewish
cemetery in Nice. High on a
hill near the curving
coastline is an old building
known as the Castle. To reach
the cemetery, the visitor rides
the elevator to the top of the
Castle.
Outside, there's a sweeping
vista of sea, sand and the red
tile roofs of the old town
below. This is the hill on
which the city was first built.
The cemetery is high on this
hill, a plot of ground punc-
tuated by tall trees. A plaque
at the gate announces
"Cimetiere Israelite."
Set among the trees, the
stone markers in this
cemetery, maintained by the
city as one of four denomina-
tional burial grounds, date
back to the sixteenth century.
They are massive and ornate.

But the most striking sight
is in one corner, where two
simple memorials have been
erected. As the French words
explain, one of these contains
an urn of ashes. The other
holds a receptacle of soap
made from the remains of
Jews.
Both are silent reminders
that the Jews of Nice do not
forget the painful chapter of
their history when virtually
all the city's Jews were
deported.
