teachings in German lang-
uage and literature were
matched by the manner in
which he made Yiddish a
language to be studied and
respected.
During the more than 20
years of his residence in
Jerusalem he became an in-
spiration to his fellow
Israelis, at the same time
lending encouragement to
the Zionist ideals of Ameri-
can Jews.
It is not possible to provide
justice to an expression of
honor for him with brevity.
World Jewry owes him many
debts. Let us always revere
him among our great per-
sonalities of this century. ❑

headline with a
photograph showing an
Israeli being treated for in-
juries sustained from an
Arab attack, page two in the
May 18 issue related the
following:
Three Israelis Wounded
by a Knife-Wielding Pa-
lestinian
A Palestinian stabbed
three Israelis on a crowd-
ed Jerusalem street
before being captured
and beaten by
bystanders, the police
said. None of the victims,
including this man who
received treatment at a
hospital, were seriously
hurt in what was the
seventh Arab stabbing at-
tack in Israel this year.
The same morning on page
four, the Detroit Free Press
resorted to the headline
Palestinian Assailant
Beaten In Jerusalem.
Jerusalem — A Palestin-
ian wielding a double-
bladed dagger stabbed
three Israelis on a
downtown street in
Jerusalem on Friday
before being caught and
beaten by bystanders,
police said.
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir said on Israeli
radio that he was sorry
the Arab was caught
alive.
The victims were not se-
riously injured, police
said.
In the interest of good
journalism and honorable
editing such a tactic in the
media must not be permitted
to go unchallenged. The Free
Press' unfair headlining has
been resented in the past.
This new resort to unjust
headlining cannot go un-
noticed. ❑
