Iraqi Seeking
Asylum
Toronto (JTA) — A 27-
year-old Baghdad-born man
who claims to have been a
double agent working for the
Iraqi and. Israeli intelligence
agencies is seeking political
asylum in Canada.
Ali Hussein Sumaida,
disguised by a wool hat and
dark sunglasses, told an
immigration panel that he
was employed by both the
Iraqi secret service,
Mukhabarat, and the Israeli
Mossad.
He also claims, in a recent-
ly published book, that the
1981 Israeli air attack on the
Iraqi nuclear reactor failed.
Under Canadian law,
those requesting asylum
must pass a credibility hear-
ing before appearing in front
of a full adjudication panel,
which then decides whether
to grant immigrant status or
recommend deportation pro-
ceedings.
Sumaida wrote that he
worked for Mossad in
England from 1984 to 1985,
when he was a computer
science student at the Uni-
versity of Salford, near Man-
chester.
He said he gathered in-
formation and recruited
sympathizers.
The two-man panel that
will rule on SiimAida's peti-
tion will have to decide
whether certain obvious
errors in his book cast doubt
on his tale as a whole.
Israel Unveils
Smart Weapon
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Israeli government's
Weapons Development Au-
thority, known as Rafael,
has unveiled a sophisticated
air-to-ground missile called
"Popeye," which has been
used by the Israeli air force
for some time and has been
sold to the U.S. Air Force.
It can hit a target 60 miles
away with "window-entry
accuracy," reserve Maj. Gen.
Musa Peled told military
correspondents here May 12.
Gen. Peled urged the
defense establishment to
take the wraps off other
sophisticated military
hardware developed by
Rafael to promote sales
abroad. The Popeye missiles
sell for $800,000 apiece.
A senior Rafael engineer
said the Popeye has a soph-
isticated guidance system
with built-in television. "It
can be guided through the
window of your choice, 60
miles from the plane that
launched it," he said.
