Mr. Duncan, an active
member of the temple's so-
cial action committee, said
the interdenominational
service took place last year
at the Westminster Presby-
terian Church across from
Sinai Hospital.
Sponsored by the San
Francisco-based Mobiliza-
tion Against AIDS, similar
vigils took place last
weekend in 238 cities in 47
countries, including Jeru-
salem and Tel Aviv, where 86
candles were lit for the
number of AIDS patients that
have died in Israel.
In Michigan, 2,179 cases of
AIDS were reported as of
April, according to the Mich-
igan Department of Health.
Out of 161,073 AIDS cases
reported in the United
States since June 1981,
100,777 people died as of the
end of November, according
to the Centers for Disease
Control in Atlanta. CDC
researchers predict that in
the next 3 to 5 years, as
many as 215,000 more
Americans will die of AIDS.
"We keep saying this, but
AIDS is not a gay disease
anymore,"said Rev. James
Curry, an outreach
counselor at the AIDS Inter-
faith Network who spoke at
Temple Emanu-El. He lost
his 26-year-old sister to
AIDS in 1986.
Rev. Curry, who had never
been in a synagogue before,
was pleased to see such an
outpouring of love and com-
munity support.
"It was wonderful to see
the Jewish community, in
particular, to allow so many

different faiths to come
together in their house of
worship."
Rabbi Lane Steinger of
Temple Emanu-El said his
synagogue welcomes gays
and lesbians and has com-
mitted itself to helping those
with AIDS.
"Every year, the vigil is
held at some kind of a chur-
ch. We're happy to be the
first synagogue to host an
AIDS vigil."
Glenn Young, 33, of Red-
ford, has full-blown AIDS
and cancer. He's lost all his
hair from chemotherapy
treatments at the Henry
Ford Hospital.
"It's hard for me to get
around," Mr. Young said,
"but being at this vigil was
the best medicine I've had in
a long time. I can't tell you
what it means to someone
with AIDS to be surrounded
by so much support and com-
forting words." ❑

diplomatic tension between
Australia and Moslem-ruled
Malaysia.
A statement issued April
19 by UMNO's spokesman,
Mustapha Yaakub, accused
"Australian Zionists" of in-
filtrating Malaysia to bring
down the prime minister,
Dr. Mahathir Mohammad.
The APC alleged that was
the aim of "international
Zionism."
