Is The Media
Anti-Religious?

To help reverse the
media's sparse coverage of
religion, the Ethics and
Public Policy Center in
Washington recently held a
one-day symposium on
"Religion, Politics and the
Press."
Among the comments:
• "Om- whole culture tries
to ignore religion, just as a
century ago it tried to ignore
sex," said Gary Wills, au-
thor of Under God. "There is
an open hostility toward re-
ligion in the academic world,
and, to some extent, in jour-
nalism. I've never heard
such bigotry among my col-
leagues at Northwestern as
during the Carter presiden-
cy."
• Not editors' bias, but
"profound ignorance, espe-
cially among Ivy League
graduates," causes inade-
quate coverage of religion,
according to Ken Woodward,
Newsweek's religion
reporter.
• "In the establishment
political media, there is real
hostility to the power of re-
ligious groups," said
Dorothy Lynch, political
editor of CBS. "To deny the
existence of hostility as well
as ignorance is to ignore an
important factor."
As if to confirm the
media's tendency to avoid
religious issues, the Re-
ligious Public Relations
Council just awarded its first
Annual Spotlight Award to
Barbara Reynold of USA
Today for her column about
the media.
The title?
"Religion is the Greatest
Story Ever Missed."

Post Scolded
For Jewish I.D.

The Washington Post has
been scolded for a May 10
story that referred to the
founders of floundering
Madison Bank as "mostly
Jewish real estate de-
velopers."
Don Brown, a senior lec-
turer in real estate at Har-
vard Business School, called
the phrase "gratuitous,"
"inflammatory," and
"irrelevant."
"If the reporter really
thought religion an ap-
propriate aspect of the
story," asked Mr. Brown,
"why didn't she state that
the three Antonellis and
Angelo Puglisi (all four are
bank directors) are Catholic
and that Blackie Auger is
Greek Orthodox? ..."
