N

ancy Garlock Ed-
munds began her ca-
reer in 1976 as a
clerk for the late Federal
Judge Ralph Freeman.
"He was a substantial in-
fluence on my life," says Ms.
Edmunds, a partner at
Dykema Gossett law firm
who hopes to return to the
same courthouse by the end
of the year — this time as a
federal judge for the U. S.
District Court for the east-
ern district of Michigan.
"He was very careful and
thorough with a deep sense
of commitment and justice
without a personal agenda,"
Ms. Edmunds says. "I'm not
saying I wanted to be a judge
from that moment on. But it
is something I have always
considered the greatest
achievement."
Ms. Edmunds, 43, has been
recommended by the U.S.
Department of Justice to fill
the position vacated by
Judge Richard Suhrheinrich,
who has moved to the
Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of
Appeals.
She was one of three
names forwarded to the
Justice Department by the
members of the Michigan
Republican congressional
delegation.
Ms. Edmunds now must be
cleared by the FBI and the
American Bar Association
before her appointment is
submitted to President
George Bush for formal rec-
ommendation. The appoint-
ment must then be confirm-
ed by the U.S. Senate and
House of Representatives.
If her appointment is con-
firmed, Ms. Edmunds would
bring to four the number of
Jewish judges on Michigan's
eastern district bench. She
would join Judges Avern
Cohn, Gerald Rosen and
Bernard Friedman. She also
would become the third
woman on the court, joining
Anna Diggs Taylor and Bar-
bara Hackett.
"There are more and more
women now in the legal pro-
fession," Ms. Edmunds says.
"The bench is a bit behind.
For a long time, there were
none. Now women have had
enough experience and there
are more elected and ap-
pointed female judges as a
result.
"I think it is great that
women are advancing and
being recognized profes-
sionally," she says. "My

Nancy Edmunds:
Future judge.

primary interest is that
qualified people take these
positions, and I am glad that
more women are having the
opportunity to reach that
level of qualification and
merit."
Ms. Edmunds, whose fami-
ly emigrated to the United
States from Russia and
Austria, says America has
especially been a land of op-
portunity for the Jewish
people.
"We can't deny the many
successes of Jewish people in
the United States. I am
grateful for that," she says.
"This is not true in every
country in the world."
An attorney who spe-
cializes in litigation, Ms.
Edmunds also has been ac-
tive in the community.
Within the Republican Par-
ty, she serves on the Repub-
lican Women's Forum, the
Republican Committee of
Oakland County and the 400
Club Finance Committee.
In addition, she is a board
member for Saginaw Valley
State University and Tem-
ple Beth El. She also serves
on the religious school and
membership committees at
Beth El.
She is a member of the
American Israel Public Af-
fairs Committee and the
lawyers' and business and
professional women's divi-
sions of the Jewish Welfare
Federation.
"Nancy is very active in
the religious, secular and po-
litical areas of the commun-
ity," says Oakland County
Republican Chairman Jim
Alexander. "She is a credit
to the community and will
make an excellent federal
judge."
Ms. Edmunds is married
and has two children. ❑
