Hungarian, Romanian and
Portuguese.
Part of the cutback in-
cludes prime-time evening
broadcasts. Now, the broad-
casts will come to North
America at 3 p.m. and 5:30
p.m.
The authority said that it
is using money saved from
the cutbacks to fund a sta-
tion for new immigrants in
Israel and stations broad-
casting programs about re-
gional road safety.
Mr. Gale, who has listened
to outlets from all over the
world, including the short-
lived "Mother of All
Battles" radio out of Iraq,
said that the cutback hurts
Israel's opportunity to get its
point of view across interna-
tionally, especially since its
enemies take every oppor-
tunity to get their point of
view known.
Moshe Fox, the spokesman
for the Israeli consulate in
Chicago, said the cutbacks
were purely budgetary. He
said the consulate has
receive' little feedback from
the American public concer-
ning the cutbacks.
"I don't know how many
Allan Gales there are
around here that follow the
world from Jerusalem," Mr.
Fox said. "The broadcasts
are very useful and the
cause is a good cause. But
there had to be some
changes."
Mr. Gale said the irony is
that interest in short wave is
at an all-time high since the
Persian Gulf war. ❑

He said this week that
BBYO approached him

me and approached me, but
we decided that we want to
stay here," Mr. Fisher said.
His wife, Ofra Fisher, is ex-
ecutive director of Detroit's
Agency for Jewish Edu-
cation.
"We decided that this is
the right place for us," he
said. "We like it here and
want to stay." ❑
