Hang the flag at the front
door. Decorate with red, white
and blue bunting, and carry
the color scheme through to
paper goods and flowers. Ask
guests to come in red, white
and blue casual attire.
Keep the menu old - fash-
ioned, down-home, American
picnic fare — platters of fried
chicken, a bushel of corn on
the cob, fresh vegetables from
the garden or the nearby pro-
duce stand, ice-cold water-
melon and deviled eggs. For
dessert, serve cherry and ap-
ple pies.
Spread blankets under
trees for dining and round up
lots of lawn chairs. Set up
horseshoes, volleyball and
softball, if you have the space.
As dusk falls, light some
torches and square dance on
the lawn.
Costume parties aren't just
for Halloween. Throw a Mid-
summer's Night Dream Cos-
tume Party. Ask your guests
to come dressed as fancifully
as they please. Or have a Sur-
pressed Desire party where
they come dressed as some-
one they might like to be, if
only for the night.
Use flowers, lighting and
whatever else you can think
of to create a magical environ-
ment. Hire a dance band or
have plenty of records to play.
Serve a wine punch and a
fruit punch in the prettiest
glass punch bowls you can
find. Pass silver trays of
canapes and exquisite hors
d'oeuvres.
Circulate a tea cart filled
with gorgeous desserts like
glazed fruit tarts or sinfully
rich chocolate cake. Add a
tray of fresh fruit, cheeses and
nuts. Fill china cups with
special blends of coffees.
If costumes seem a bit too
much when temperatures are
peaking, throw a Masked
Ball. The only requirement is
for guests to arrive wearing a
mask. Give prizes for the
most beautiful, the funniest,
the most whimRicaL Take lots
of pictures and after the par-
ty, send each guest a small
photo in a pretty frame.
For a more casual party,
host a Diner Dinner. Choose
a black and white color
scheme. Have guests dress in
clothes from the 50s. Rent a
jukebox filled with oldies but
goodies. Make room for danc-
ing. Serve diner food like
meat loaf and gravy, onion
rings, french fries, two or
three different pies. _
Parties can be built around
any theme. Just sit back, let
your imagination run wild,
and go for it. ❑
