Geneva (JTA) — The
Geneva-based Inter-
Parliamentary Union con-
cluded its 85th conference in
Pyongyang, North Korea,
with a resolution une-
quivocally endorsing the es-
tablishment of an indepen-
dent Palestinian state on
territory evacuated by
Israel.
The resolution urges Israel
to withdraw unconditionally
from the West Bank, Gaza
Strip, Golan Heights and
southern Lebanon. It also
calls on Israel to stop
building settlements in the
territories and to dismantle
existing ones.
An Israeli delegation par-
ticipated in the resolution
drafting committee but ap-
parently was unable to mod-
ify the anti-Israel language
of the resolution. Also serv-
ing on the committee were
delegates from Iraq, Syria,
Iran, Egypt and Algeria.
Members of the Israeli
delegation, which was head-
ed by Knesset member
Yehoshua Matza of Likud,
included Haim Corfu, also of
Likud, and Raanan Cohen
and Edna Solodar, both of
Labor.

Seeks Repeal
Miami (JTA) — The
Catholic Archdiocese of
Miami has issued a call for
the repeal of the United
Nations 1975 resolution
which declares Zionism to be
"a form of racial discrimina-
tion." In doing so, the Miami
Archdiocese, according to
the Catholic Bishops Con-
ference, became the first
local archdiocese in the
nation to take such a posi-
tion.
Local Jewish leaders im-
mediately praised the ac-
tion, as did a broad range of
local Christian and
ecumenical groups.
Rabbi Barry Konovitch,
president of the Rabbinical
Association of Greater
Miami, called the act more
than an act merely for Israel
or the Jewish community.
Mark Freedman, executive
director of the southeastern
office of the American Jew-
ish Congress, thanked the
archdiocese for adding its
"voice to those who seek
justice and decency in socie-
ty — recognizing that the
search for world peace can be
achieved only by aggressive-
ly combating racist beliefs."
