According to the professor,
the killer's surgical finesse
lays waste to another theory
that a Polish Jewish laborer
did it. The suspect, Severin
Klosowski, was an insane
man whom people called
"The mad Jew," Dr.
Fishman said.
But it was anti-Semitism
more than any real evidence
that gave rise to suspicions,
he said. Reports filed by the
deputy commissioner of
police referred to Mr.
Klosowski as a "low class
Jew."
"(The deputy commis-
sioner) was known to be an
anti-Semite and an anti-
alien," Dr. Fishman said.
He added that The London
Times fueled anti-Semitism
with an article that quoted
alleged cases of Polish Jews
murdering Christian
females to expiate the so-
called sin of sleeping with
gentiles.
More than 100 years later,
the Klosowski theory still
stirs anti-Semitic feelings in
England, according to Dr.
Fishman, who refused to
participate in the recent
production of a television
drama that indicts
Klosowski.
The evidence presented by
the producer, a researcher
and novelist, did not con-
vince Dr. Fishman. The
much-publicized special was
aired last October, in the
wake of vandalism of Lon-
don synagogues.
The broadcast, protested
by Jewish groups, led to "a
very small, vocal anti-
Semitic group" adding to
their fodder that Jack the
Ripper was a Jew.
Who does Dr. Fishman
suspect to be Jack the
Ripper?
He and other writers
theorize that the killer was
Montague Druitt, the son of
another eminent British
physician and brother of a
surgeon. The man Dr.
Fishman and others suspect
was Jack the Ripper was a
failed lawyer who became a
prep school master across
the Thames River opposite
the East End.
"He had a terrible
weakness for low class wo-
men and used to go with all
the whores," Dr. Fishman
said.
Three weeks after the last
Jack the Ripper murder,
Montague Druitt was fished
out of the Thames after re-
portedly committing suicide,
Dr. Fishman said. An au-
topsy revealed Mr. Druitt
was suffering from the final
stages of syphilis and had
gone mad.
