YOU COULD BE A WINNER
AT MALTER FURS

Social Action Committee
Chairman Susan Yorke con-
curs. When her committee
was developed last year, "we
felt very strongly that we
would act as a catalyst for
specific projects but we
would not do for the tem-
ple," she says.
Today, the social- action
committee heads subcom-
mittees that work with
Chaldeans and blacks, that
help the hungry and
homeless and that benefit
the environment. It also
sponsors onetime programs
like a drive to send packages
to soldiers stationed in the
Gulf. Hearing of the drive,
250 congregants volunteered
goods like stationery and
magazines to send to the
soldiers and to help prepare
the 400 packages. They also
donated $3,000 to cover the
cost of mailing.
The diversity and creativi-
ty evinced in programming
is what allows congregants
to feel intimately involved in
the temple, despite its size,
Rabbi Loss says. "Anyone
who wants - to become in-
volved here has the oppor-
tunity to do so."
"When we started out we
were small and we all knew
each other," Temple Israel
founding member George
Stutz says. "We're bigger
now, but it's still a warm,
family-oriented congrega-
tion. It always has been.
That's the beauty of it." ❑
