week, we will publish requests for needed items.

Yad Ezra is a food pantry ser-
ving low-income members of
the Jewish community. Since
opening its doors in February,
1990, Yad Ezra has dispensed
over 100,000 pounds of food.

toothbrushes, toothpaste, food,
especially infant food, a large
food mixer and small paper-
back dictionaries.

Center of Metropolitan Detroit
addresses fair housing issues
in the Detroit metropolitan
area, seeking to assure equal
access to housing without
discrimination based on race,
sex, color, religion, national
origin, marital or handicapped
status. Fair Housing Center
needs volunteers for complaint
investigations and research,
office work to prepare
materials for attorneys, corn-
puters and associated hard-
ware and software, an electric
typewriter, letter and legal-size
file drawers, a fax machine and
a desktop size paper folding
machine.

Help Against Violent Encounters Now
HAVEN
HAVEN, Oakland County Counseling Agency and shelter
for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, has schedul-
ed orientations for prospective volunteers in June.
Volunteers are needed as first response advocates to pro-
vide crisis intervention for survivors of sexual assault and
domestic violence. Volunteers are also needed to work the crisis
line at the shelter which is located in the Pontiac area.
HAVEN has a number of other programs in which women
and men volunteer their time. For further information about

FAMILY TO FAMILY
The Family to Family program, a joint project of the National Coun-
cil of Jewish Women and Women's Division of the Jewish Welfare
Federation, has been successful in connecting many families in the
Detroit area with Soviet Jewish newcomers. We have a special need
now for senior friendship. Your lives would be greatly enriched if
you reached out to welcome these wonderful people. Won't you

This weekly feature highlights some organizations in the Jewish and
general communities that rely on volunteers. Opportunities for a
nearly limitless range of volunteers will be highlighted.
Horseback Riding
FOr Handicappers
Horseback Riding for Handi-
cappers is sponsored by the
Young Variety Club of Detroit
and the Oakland County 4H
Club. It offers children (ages 5
and up) and adults with emo-
tional and/or physical
disabilities the opportunity to
ride horses and have some
fun. The Bloomfield Open
Hunt Club donates the riding
facilities. Horses are donated
by the Hunt Club and the
Charles L. Bower School
Farm.
Volunteers are needed to
support, encourage, and assist
the handicapped riders, and
lead or walk alongside the
horses. Volunteers will work in
teams of threes; there will be
one team for every rider, with
instructors available for
guidance.
Skills needed:
— Experience with horses
is not necessary, but is
helpful
— Patience and enthusiasm
— Ability to work with
people with special
needs
— Must be at least 15 years
old
Estimated time commitment:
6:30-8:00 Monday evenings

Sinai Hospital Guild/
Department of
Volunteer Services

The purpose of the Guild is
to promote and advance the
welfare of Sinai Hospital and
Sinai Health Services and to
raise funds. The Guild offers
Volunteer Services, Service
With Love, and Lifeline. Ser-
vice With Love is a program in
which volunteers make friendly
phone calls of reassurance to
elderly persons, one morning
a week from home. Lifeline is
a personal medical emergen-
cy response system which
enables people to continue to
live independently, reassured
that emergency assistance
can be summoned by a push
of a button. The Guild also
runs the Gift Shop, Outreach
to Youth, and Community
Education. It provides funding
for cardiology research,
general research, education,
and Tay-Sachs screening.
Adult volunteers are needed
to work in the Emergency
Department, Perinatal Depart-
ment, Nursing Units, Gift
Shop, Surgical Family Waiting
Room, Primary Care Center,
Outpatient Psychiatry, and the
Ambulatory Surgery Center (in
Farmington Hills). Volunteers
are also needed to serve as
clerical workers, patient
representatives and hospital
tour guides, and to work with
the Gift Car, L.I.P. (Language
Interpretation for Patients,
especially Russian) and Ser-
vice With Love.
Opportunities for youth
volunteers include working in
the Emergency Department,
Nursing Units, and Gift Shop
and working with the Gift Cart
and Patient Transportation.
Skills needed:
— Must be compassionate
— Must be at least 15 years
old
— Ability to work within
hospital environment.
Estimated Time Commit-
ment: Once a week, for a
minimum of 4 hours, with a 3
month commitment.

Concerned Individuals

Coalition of Concerned In-
dividuals is a support group for
Michigan inmates and their
families. It attempts to ensure
that today's youth do not
become tomorrow's inmates,
by providing programs to keep
the youth off the streets and
uninvolved with crime.
Volunteers are needed to act
as educational and sports pro-
gram directors, counselors,
pen pals, and clerical help.
Volunteers are needed to help
keep families intact and func-
tioning while a loved one is
incarcerated.
Estimated Time Commit-
ment: a couple of hours per
week.

JEWISH NEWS ON TAPE, a new project that will make weekly copies of the newspaper available
on cassette tapes for the visually impaired and disabled.
The project is brought to the community courtesy of the National Council of Jewish Women, its Hakol
branch, The Jewish News, and the National Reading Library for the Blind. Tapes will be distributed
through the National Reading Library for the Blind in Farmington Hills, which estimates it has hun-
dreds of Jewish subscribers. Persons in need of this service may request copies through NCJW.
Readers are needed for Thursday evenings and Friday mornings. Time commitment is flexible. In-
terested volunteers may contact Ruth Littmann or Janelle Miller at the NCJW office, 258-6000.
