"One Bible story I came
across talked about Samuel
working for 'Eli the
preacher' in the 'church,' "
Rabbi Levy said, referring to
Eli the priest in Solomon's
temple in Jerusalem.
"Another one was about
Mary and Joseph on the
eighth day taking Jesus to
`church,' " another
misleading reference to
Solomon's temple.
Upset that Christian chil-
dren were being fed such
misrepresentations of
Judaism, Rabbi Levy decid-
ed that interfaith curricular
materials had to be produc-
ed. Wendy Watterston, one
of the rabbi's confirmation
students, made the creation
of such material her confir-
mation project.
In early 1982, Rabbi Levy
presented the final project —
an interreligious coloring
book — to a meeting of the
Texas Conference of Chur-
ches, where it was received
with great interest.
Four mainline churches in
Tyler — Presbyterian,
Methodist, Disciples of
Christ, and Episcopalian —
picked up on the idea and
joined with Rabbi Levy's
synagogue to create a small
interfaith "experimental
classroom." Three second-
graders from each of the five
congregations were chosen
for a class to be taught by
three teachers — one
Catholic, one Protestant,
and one Jewish.
The "How We Celebrate"
experiment was so suc-
cessful with second-graders,
Rabbi Levy said, that the
participating congregations
developed similar curricula
for fifth graders, tenth
graders, and adults. Within
a few years, two other local
congregations — Baptist and
Catholic — joined the ex-
periment.
Looking for a publisher for
the coloring book, Rabbi
Levy presented it to the
UAHC for consideration. In
1990, the UAHC agreed to
publish an edited version.
"We knew it would be used
primarily by Jewish chil-
dren," Mr. Kasakove said.
"So we changed the focus."
Pictures of a church, a
communion chalice and
Easter eggs were removed,
which changed the coloring
book's balance.
The coloring book's final
text does mention Easter
and Christmas along with
its explanation of Jewish
holidays, the rabbi said, but
its focus is clearly on
Judaism, with six pictures
about Jewish holidays and
the remaining three on
secular themes. ❑
