with a large Chanukah me-
norah in the window.
Published last year by the
Reform movement's Union
of American Hebrew Con-
gregations (UAHC), the
coloring book is designed for
use in synagogue and church
classrooms. The book tries to
explain Judaism and Chris-
tianity to.young readers.
"For us to do this is rather
revolutionary," said David
Kasakove, UAHC's director
of media and communica-
tions. "But, in fact, this is
really just a recognition that
many of our students not
only have friends who are
Christian, but have family
members who are Christian
as well."
Tzvi Dole is a staff reporter for
the Baltimore Jewish Times.
The text of the coloring
book follows a public library
reading club, composed of
Jewish and Christian chil-
dren under the guidance of a
friendly librarian, as they
teach each other lessons
ranging from how to pro-
nounce "Chanukah" and
"Sukkot" to the significance
of Christmas and Easter.
"We live in a pluralistic
society,". Mr. Kasakove said.
"We feel that our students
need to appreciate that .
Judaism is one of many
world religions. We want
them to be proud of their
Judaism while at the same
time respecting the religious
integrity of members of
other faith groups. We
decided to start with a color-
ing book as a test market for
this area. "
Rabbi Eugene Levy, then
at Reform Temple Beth El in
Tyler, Texas, came up with
the idea for the interfaith
coloring book in 1980, when
his wife showed him a Bible
story book for Christian
children that she had
spotted at the Baptist day
care center where she work-
ed.
