looms even larger — there
isn't much room for
anything else in the
songwriter's apartment.
"It's one room," she says of
her living space, which the
songwriter shares with two
cats and two "free-ranging"
turtles.
"But my apartment is very
clean," Ms. Gold wants one
to know. "I vacuum every
day."
She doesn't have to worry
about dusting under tables.
"I don't have a table. When I
eat, I balance 40 courses on
one knee. When I go to my
parents' house, then I sit at a
table like a mensch.
"!Don't worry," she says."
I'll have my table one day."
What she does have is her
dreams and the piano to help
make them a reality. "When
I open the lid of my piano, it
smells like childhood and I
can escape" the world.
She has escaped the pov-
erty of past years, when Ms.
Gold recalls "going to
friends' weddings empty-
handed. The only money I
had was for the train ride to
get there."
Ticketed for fame now, Ms.
Gold recalls 11 years of
working odd jobs to increase
her odds at landing her
dream. "I moved to New
York in 1978, and from '79
to '90, I took all kinds of jobs.

Ms. Gold's early muses
were musical. "Broadway
was a big inspiration," says
Ms. Gold. "For my fourth
birdthay, my parents took
me to see My Fair Lady. I fell
in love with it."
Fiddler on the Roof also in-
spired as did The Sound of
Music and the Motown
sound of the '60s.
But the Beatles proved
that all you need is love .. .
and a good song. "The
Beatles," says Ms. Gold,
"were the most important
influence on my entire life,
politically and musically."
While worshipping the
Beatles as an influence, Ms.
Gold knows to whom she can
turn for real sustenance. "I
always give thanks to the
Almighty," says Ms. Gold. "I
have always been connected
to God. I'm very Jewish in
spirit."
Spirited and spunky, Ms.
Gold is awe-struck at what
life has become. "Here I am
one day, sitting in my one
room, talking on the phone
to Burt Bacharach and
Carole Bayer Sager.
"It doesn't get any better
than this. I don't want for
anything."
Not even a table? "No,"
Ms. Gold adds impishly, "not
even a table."
