Of Mice,
For Men
Rehovot, Israel (JTA) — A
team of scientists at the
Weizmann. Institute, with
the aid of laboratory mice,
may have significantly ad-
vanced the study of human
blood and immune system
diseases, including AIDS.
A sophisticated bone
marrow transplant pro-
cedure developed at the in-
stitute enables the mice to
survive for extended periods
with blood tissue from
human sources, providing
the scientists with a live
laboratory for study.
The stable transplant of
human blood-forming tissue
to laboratory animals has
long eluded hematologists.
Currently, a great deal of
research into blood and im-
mune system diseases in-
volves animal systems. But
researchers cannot be sure
that their findings accu-
rately reflect parallel condi-
tions in humans.
According to Professor
Yair Reisner of the in-
stitute's department of
membrane research and
biophysics, who heads the
team, the significance of
tissue transplant develop-
ment lies in bridging the
tremendous biological and
genetic gap between mice
and men.
A report on this develop-
ment appeared in the latest
issue of Science, the journal
of the American Association
for the Advancement of
Science.
