elderly and children. Because
it was difficult to return home
every day before the 6 p.m.
curfew, the young people had
left for the new city.
On Nov. 29, 1947, the
United Nations voted to par-
tition Palestine. The Arabs
declared a three-day strike
and a siege on the Jewish
Quarter. By then, 8,500 Jews
were left in the area. During
the six months of the siege,
the population of the Jewish
Quarter continued to
decrease.
At first, the British Army
brought in food. But
whenever they wanted to
punish the Jews, the British
stopped the convoys. After two
months, there were no
telephones and no electrici-
ty. Many families left Or
HaChaim Street, and those
who stayed moved deeper in-
to the Jewish Quarter. Every
time a Jewish family left, an
Arab family moved in. The
Weingartens were left alone
on their street.
When the British withdrew
from Palestine in May 1948,
the Arabs attacked from all
sides. The 700 Jews left in the
Old City were not prepared
for war. The Weingarten
home was bombed and fell;
Rivca Weingarten's mother
had a stroke and was paralyz-
ed. The family moved to
another home which also was
bombed.
On Lag B'Omer, the in-
habitants of the Jewish
Quarter gathered in the Rav
Yochanan Ben Zachai Syna-
gogue and decided to evacu-
ate. The women and children
left as refugees; the men were
taken as prisoners of war. At
her parents' request, Rivca
left with the refugees. The
rest of her family were taken
with the prisoners of war. The
only family removed from its
home by force, the We-
ingartens became the last to
leave the Jewish Quarter in
1948.
When, on June 9, 1967, Riv-
ca Weingarten returned to
the Jewish Quarter to point
out areas to the Israeli
soldiers, she found it as she
had left it in 1948: destroyed,
with sewage running the
streets. She made her way to
her family's house. It was oc-
cupied by Arab refugees.
When she saw her home she
said she wanted to do three
things: return there to live,
renovate and repair the Or
HaChaim synagogue and do
something to remind people
of the past as nothing remain-
ed of it.
The army evacuated the
refugees from the synagogues
and fenced off the buildings.
They also expelled the Arabs
from the Weingarten house.
On July 23, Rivca We-
ingarten held the first public
celebration in the Jewish
Quarter.
But it was only in late 1968,
with the establishment of the
Company for the Reconstruc-
tion and Development of the
Jewish Quarter of the Old Ci-
ty of Jerusalem, that the
quarter began to once again
thrive. Today, the area is a
juxtaposition of the ancient
and modern, its apartments,
shops and yeshivot forming
the texture of the Jewish
Quarter's life. And the Old
Yishuv Court Museum,
established by Mrs. We-
ingarten and opened
Jerusalem Day 1976, flags
the way into the quarter, a
tribute to the heart of a city
reunited.
Sciatica can be a severely painful condition. It is caused by in-
flammation of the sciatic nerve, a nerve which runs from the lower
back through the hip and down the leg.
The most common cause of sciatica is pinching or irritation of
the nerve in the lower spine.
Sciatica is one of the most common conditions for back surgery
and has a high risk of complications. More recent interest in non-
surgical treatments for sciatic nerve pain has caused several re-

searchers to look at chiropractic manipulation as an alternative.
Researchers at St. Thomas Hospital in London recently reported the results of non-
surgical treatments for back and sciatic nerve pain in the British Journal of
Rheumatology; they found Chiropractic manipulation the single most effective treat-
ment in the 513 patients studied.
A similar study, at the California College of Medicine at the University of Califor-
nia Irvine, also found manipulation to significantly improve clinical signs of sciatic
nerve compression. Clearly, chiropractic manipulation is one of the most effective con-
servative treatments in those with sciatic nerve pain and should be the first considera-
tion in those with sciatica.

Israel Needs Unified
Economic Outlook
Jerusalem (JTA) — Dov
Lautman, president of the
Israeli Manufacturers
Association, last Monday
urged the government, the
business community and
labor to unite behind a sin-
gle economic program "to
create jobs and save aliyah."
Mr. Lautman, a leading
industrialist, is concerned
most by soaring unemploy-
ment, especially among re-
cent immigrants, while
economic leaders quarrel
over what to do.
"I call on the Bank of
Israel to stop criticizing the
Treasury, the Treasury to
stop criticizing the central
bank and on the Histadrut to
stop criticizing the two, and
to stop dealing with the
marginal," Mr. Lautman
said in an appearance before
the Knesset Finance Com-
mittee.
The current unemploy-
ment rate is over 10 percent
of the labor force. Some
165,000 people are without
jobs, including about 14,000
immigrants.
Mr. Lautman, whose
association represents the
country's private employers,
predicted an unemployment
rate of 14 percent by the end
of this year, the equivalent
of 250,000 people out of
work.
