organized to attract publici-
ty for a specific liberal agen- -
da.
"Their motives were
suspect," Rabbi Tendler
asserted.
Whatever their motives,
their ultimate aims
amounted to a radical, if
slow, democratization of the
halachic system. By making
halachic information and
methodology fully accessible
to ordinary pulpit rabbis
(and therefore to the laity as
well) and by publishing, in
both Hebrew and English, a
range of Halachic opinion on
important issues, the Round
Table was mounting a
challenge to a halachic
system that had grown in-
creasingly elitist and au-
thoritarian.
This unspoken challenge
was most specifically
directed to the Gedolim,
those revered scholars who
typically determine
Halachah from within the
narrower social context of
the yeshiva world.
Though none of the Round
Table rabbis by himself en-
joyed the stature of the
Gedolim, their hope was
that, together, they and
their work would generate
sufficient prestige to stake
out an alternative territory
in which Modern Orthodoxy
could assert its values and
worldview.
But such a movement
toward openness,
democratization, and
ultimately, perhaps, toward
communal development of
traditional Jewish law, was,
in Rabbi Tendler's words,
"anathema." He recently
expressed relief that the
Round Table is "now accep-
ting the discipline" of the
Rabbinical Council of
America (RCA).
Has the revolution died
aborning, then? Rabbi Marc
Angel, president of the RCA
and himself a founding
member of the Round Table,
insisted bluntly that the
Round Table "no longer ex-
ists." The reorganized
group, he said, will include
scholars from "all wings" of
Orthodoxy, and its papers
will be signed by individual
authors, rather than issued
under group imprimatur,
thus reducing their au-
thority.

But other members of the
group suggest that Rabbi
Angel is merely saying what
he needs to say for institu-
tional purposes. Surprising-
ly, even those members who
initially opposed the incor-
poration of the Round Table
into the RCA now endorse
the move. ❑
