What to do with "Grandma's Rugs"

Hint: Don't put them in a garage sale for $5.00!

By Kenneth Snow

OPERATIONS MANAGER - SERVICES DIVISION

Unlike old Atari games and the
clothes you bought before you
went on your diet, old Oriental
Rugs may now actually be worth
more than they were new! It makes
no difference if they've been rolled-
up in the attic for 30 years. If they
were good Oriental Rugs to begin
with, they may be even more valu-
able today.
How can you tell? Easy. Just
bring "Grandma's Rugs" to either
of the Hagopian World of Rugs
locations in Birmingham or Ann
Arbor or to Hagopian Rug Outlet
in Oak Park. One of our apprais-
ers will look the rug over and ad-
vise you as to whether this is a
"keeper" or something for your ga-
rage sale. The difference could be
worth thousands of dollars.
What should you do if one of
"Grandma's Rugs" turns out to be
a treasure? If your decor permits,
you will probably want to use it.
Before you do so, you should have
it examined to determine if it needs
to be cleaned or repaired. A dirty,
broken rug, although potentially
valuable, will not last long in daily
use. A good cleaned rug, that is
properly repaired, will last for
generations.
There is nobody that has more
knowledge in the professional care
of old Oriental Rugs than The

Original Hagopian. For more than
52 years, The Hagopian family
has cleaned and repaired Oriental
Rugs using only the finest old
world craftsmenship.
So, before you add "Grandma's
Rug" to the well-read paperbacks
and ugly bar stools, bring them
to Hagopian World of Rugs or
Hagopian Rug Outlet for an ap-
praisal. You may be pleasantly
surprised!

You Need To Know. . .
Oriental rug appraisal is more
an art than a science. These
rugs were woven by city, village
and tribal people throughout a
broad sweep of geography that
includes Persia, Turkey, Afgan-
istan, the Caucasus, Turk-
menistan, Pakistan, India,
Nepal, Tibet and China. There
are virtually hundreds of de-
signs and thousands of inter-
pretations possible. Hagopian's
appraisers have looked at and
handled innumerable rugs and
are certified by The Original Rug
Retailers Association, but now
and then a rug is so unique that
it defies attempts at attribu-
tions.
