"But waiting didn't really
help. I couldn't believe some
of the stunts students calling
themselves feminists were
pulling.
"One girl threw a piece of
chicken at Dave Mecey,
screaming, 'Use this piece of
meat,' " she said. "Another
woman, walked into the
room with Mecey, went
through the interview, and
when he asked her to remove
her jacket for some initial
Polaroid shots, the girl did,
but not before she showed
him the nasty things she had
tatooed all over her shoulder
and arm.
"I'm not saying they didn't
have a right to protest," Ms.
Leib said, "but it was the
uncontrolled way in which
they protested. It was
definitely not in good taste."
Linda Rosenfeld, 22, who
just graduated from U-M,
was one of the leading pro-
testors on campus. She
helped organize picket
posters that read, "Playboy,
go play with yourself," and a
noon rally on the "Diag,"
the central plaza on campus.
"Everyone that I know on
campus was appalled," she
said. "Playboy touts them-
selves as the ultimate affir-
mation of a woman's sex-
uality — as if showing your
body in their magazine is a
woman's ultimate goal.
"Playboy only represents
one kind of woman — the big
breasted, long-legged kind.
They don't recognize
homosexuality, or many
women of different races and
shapes and sizes.
"Sex isn't just about who's
attractive and who's not,"
she said. "There's more to it
than just lust and animal at-
traction. Playboy exploits
women and showcases them
solely for the pleasure of
men."
Julie Steiner, director of
U-M's Sexual Assault
Prevention and Awareness
Center, said she wasn't as
upset with the women who
chose to pose as she was with
the magazine itself.

"The women who sign up
have been brought up to
believe that our self-worth is
only in the way that we look,
and that is a crime," Ms.
Steiner said. Playboy
spokeswoman Elizabeth
Norris said that while pro-
testors and narrow-
L..
' mindedness are expected,
Playboy doesn't force anyone
to do anything they don't
want to do.
"For many women, this is
a fantasy come true," said
Ms. Norris, director of public
relations. "We come to
towns, and we let the public
know we're here. It's up to
