Oyfgebn Land For Peace Gehert To The Israelis
times in our geshichte.
When I visited Israel in 1968, a
fellow pasazshir on the flight told
me she iz geven a ninth doyre
Egyptian Jew. Her family hot antlofn
from Spain to escape the
Inquisition. She had fled to escape
Mitsraim where Israel became a
state. She hot gevost the historical
pattern of Jewish lebn. She knew
that the farbahaltn and expressed
anti-Semitism in Egypt would make
it perilous for a Jew to iberbleibn
there. Since the biblical time, when
a pharoah hot oyfgeshtanin "who
knew not Joseph" and oppressed
the Jews with knechtshaft and hard
arbet, oppression has been a
repetitive fact of history.
This pattern of being citizens
with no citizen privileges or shitsn
culminated with the final deadly
balaydikung — the Holocaust.
Because they had no country of
their own, there was no plats to
provide safe refuge. I fail to see how
any Jew can be absolutely zicher
about his fate or the goyrl of his
children and ayniklach.
Now, about the size of Israel. It

Whenever the subject of Israel
comes up, two ideas come to zinen.
One is the fact that it is the only
plats on earth where the Jew does
not represent a minority. The
tsvayter is a visual bild of the size
of the country.
If ine judged its groyskeit by the
media attention it attracts, one
would klern that it was as large as
the Soviet Union or Chine, maybe
both. Leoylem for a country, its
klayntshik, no larger than Rhode
Island or halb the Michigan Upper
Peninsula.
The Faraynike Statn consists of
peoples of various descent — Irish,
Italian, Swedish, etc. They all possess
a medina of origin, a place where
they are in the merheit. A place of
refuge, if the necessity arose.
Biz 1948, with the establishment
of the State of Israel, we als Jews
had none. We hadn't had any since
biblical tseitn. We have been
citizens of other countries, although
not exactly like other brigers. This
has proven to be a disaster too fil
Israel And Egypt
is so klayn that, if the West Bank
and Gaza are given up, the area
where most Jews lebn will be 10
miles wide. I've gone that far for a
good pizza. It vet zein a small
amount of land but a great sacrifice
for the promise of sholem.
In the last analysis, the decision
of whether to oyfgebn land for the
promise of peace gehert to the
Israelis. Whether it will be a good
decision or not, it's still theirs to
make. They are citizens of a
democracy — their democracy. They
are, after all, the keepers of our
sanctuary.

Puzzle by JUDY SILBERG LOEBL
Egypt and Israel fought many wars: in 1948 Egypt was one of 6 Arab nations to attack Israel; Israel invaded the Sinai in 1956 to protect the Suez Canal; Egypt was one of 4 countries that attacked Israel in
1967 during the Six Day War; and Egypt again attacked Israel in 1973. It therefore was a surprise that Egypt would be the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel. The United States brought Israel and
Egypt together and after 1 1/2 years of negotiations a peace treaty, called the Camp David Accord, was signed. The other Arab nations opposed the peace treaty, however Israel and Egypt still remain at peace.
RULES FOR THE GAME: A game for 2 4 players. The object of the game is to collect four Peace Chips and make the journey from Israel to Egypt. You will need one die, playing pieces, and Peace
Chips. (Cut the Peace Chips out and place on the board.) To begin each player receives one Peace Chip. Roll to see who goes first. Once on the board the direction to move is determined by the roll of the die.
An even number moves clockwise, and an odd number moves counter clockwise. The direction may change each time according to the roll. Follow the direction on the board to gain or lose Peace Chips. A player
must collect 4 Peace Chips before she/he can enter the road to Egypt. The first one to collect 4 Peace Chips and enter Egypt is the winner of the game.
