Harlene Appelman: Covenant Award winner.

vice of North America
(JESNA).
Besides JEFF, Ms. Ap-
pelman is also the senior
consultant to the Detroit
Jewish Welfare Federation
for educational planning and
development. But what all of
these titles translate into is
that she's given a great deal
to the community in terms of
Jewish programs that in-
volve children and parents
together.
Last week, at an educa-
tional debate hosted by Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses, Ms.
Appelman stood out when
she told the audience of 300,
" a person has to know about
God to let him in. Feeling

"Your kids ...
need something
at home to back
it all up."

Jewish is not enough. You
have to do something to be
Jewish."
She also said that it was
important for parents to
share the experience of
tzedakah with their chil-
dren, to literally write a
check to a charity with a
child in witness.
"Your kids can't learn to
have relevant Jewish expe-
riences without something
at home to back it all up,"
she said. "We as parents
need to do a better job
teaching our children that
there's a joy in being Jew-
ish."
She added that whatever a
family can do together, be it
light candles on Friday
night or attend a Jewish
program together, it's some-
thing that should be con-
sidered special. The trick,
she said, is for the family to
take that next Jewish step.
"Family education is
something that has gained

increased attention over the
years," said Lawrence Ziffer,
the Federation's director of
planning and agency rela-
tions. "What Harlene does is
probably one of the best ex-
amples of doing something
within the community in-
stead of just talking about it.
She has created this aura of
family education as some-
thing that is good for all of
us."
Indeed, Mandell Berman,
who underwrote the JEFF
program, had nothing but
praise for Ms. Appelman.
"What she has done for the
JEFF program and the Jew-
ish community is wonder-
ful," he said. "She's the one
who has implemented what
we wanted out of all of this,
and she's done so with ex-
citement and creativity."
Ms. Appelman gives off a
definite sense of warmth and
confidence about who is in
charge. Behind all her pro-
gramming is a person who
really wants Jews to feel
needed and together. She re-
cently held an after-work
dinner program for working
parents and their children.
It was just something to give
the parents a chance to enjoy
a dinner, while their chil-
dren were entertained . . . on
a weeknight.
"People are isolated and I
want them to connect," she
said. "But the main thing is
we're living in a society fill-
ed with stresses. If the Jew-
ish community doesn't deal
with people's creative needs,
you can throw everything
away. ❑
