Atari Computer Firm
Considering Israel Plant

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Inten-
sive negotiations are under
way to persuade Atari, the
U.S.-based personal com-
puter and videogames giant,
to establish plants in Israel
that would create some
3,000 jobs and exports
amounting eventually to a
half- billion dollars a year.
Atari, headquartered in
Sunnyvale, Calif., and one of
the world's leaders in com-
puter software, had planned
to open a plant in eastern
Asia.
But Israel's minister of
trade and industry, Moshe
Nissim, during a recent visit
to the United States, con-
vinced Atari's majority
stockholder, American Jew-
ish businessman Jack
Tramiel, to consider Israel.
Government officials said
Atari's investment in Israel
was conditional on the estab-
lishment of several sub-
sidiary factories here to

manufacture parts for a
main Atari plant, such as
printed circuitry, monitors
and software.
According to the ministry,
the cost of building the new
factories or making the
necessary improvements to
existing ones is between $75
million and $100 million.
Israel is offering to bear
about half the cost, with the
balance coming from private
investors enlisted by
Tramiel.
The Atari plant initially
would employ 600 workers,
many of them engineers.
Within five years, the work
force would grow to 1,000.
Computer and program sales
are projected at $150 million
a year.
The potential exports from
the subsidiary plants
employing about 2,000
workers is $300 million dur-
ing the first years of opera-
tion, eventually reaching
$500 million.

Nissan To Sell Cars
In Israel By Year's End

Washington (JTA) — The
Nissan Motor Co., one of
Japan's largest exporters of
cars and trucks, has an-
nounced it will begin selling
its vehicles in Israel by the
end of the year.
Nissan's move, following a
similar one by Toyota,
Japan's largest automotive
manufacturer, signals a
break in Japan's longtime
deferral to Arab boycott
pressures, attributed to its
dependence on Middle East
oil.
The announcement, made
in the Japanese Times, said
Nissan will ship 4,000 to
5,000 small cars to Israel,
according to Will Maslow,
general counsel of the
American Jewish Congress
and editor of its monthly

Boycott Report.
Mr. Maslow quoted the

Japanese-language news-
paper as saying Nissan's
decision was due to the
"widespread protest of
American Jewish organiza-
tions" in reaction to the
refusal of Japanese firms to
sell cars in Israel.
While American Jewish
groups have long campaign-
ed against Japanese coop-
eration with the Arab econ-
omic boycott, the cause has
most recently been taken up
by members of Congress.
Only last month, nine key

Science Center
In On Boycott

Toronto (JTA) — The On-
tario Science Center has
been found guilty of
violating the province's Dis-
criminatory Business Prac-
tices Act by signing a con-
tract with the government of
Oman that excluded Israeli

products and companies.

The conviction is the first
since the act was passed in

1978, according to Marilyn
Churley, Ontario's minister
of consumer and commercial
relations. It sends a strong
message to the community
that such practices are not
acceptable, Ms. Churley
said.
Bernie Farber, spokesman
for the Canadian Jewish
Congress, which initiated
the complaint against the
Science Center, said the
decision is "welcome news"
to the Jewish community.
He commended the provin-
cial government for its
"swift action."
